My №1 Tip for Growing Your Audience Online
Success is built upon relationships.
After reading, clapping and sharing my thoughts on one of Walter Rhein’s latest articles— check it out here — I was honoured to receive a gracious reply to my post.
Walter, being the gentleman that he is, not only took the time to thank me for the comment I left on his piece but he also posed to me a question that caused me to reflect on my progress so far and enticed me to think of the advice that I would give to my younger self if I was able to travel back in time.
The question that Walter asked me was this;
“Do you have any tips for increasing your visibility?”
Now, upon reading this I was both humbled yet embarrassed.
I was humbled to be asked my advice on growing a following but at the same time embarrassed, not because of the question but more due to the fact that my progress is minuscule compared to that of many other top writers online, regardless of the platform they present their work on.
However, after overcoming my own humility and coming to the conclusion that Walter was simply asking for me to share my personal experiences, I contemplated the question and arrived at this definitive answer;
To increases your visibility online and grow an audience you must engage and build relationships.
So, what do I mean by that?
When I say to engage and build relationships, I don’t mean you have to get to know each and every one of your followers/readers individually, you don’t have to know their life stories, their pasts, their problems, their mums and their dads.
No, what I mean is take an interest in their work. Read the content they put out — and actually read it, no skimming.
Like, clap, share, re-tweet, highlight and comment on their material.
Share your views, engage in conversation, learn, teach, enjoy the process of seeing the world from a new perspective — whether you agree with it or not.
To me, that is the only way you grow online and in life.
So, I’d like to thank Walter Rhein for his reply to my comment and for being the inspiration for this piece.
I hope that this brief but meaningful article has been of help to not only Walter but to all that have taken the time to read my response.
Thank you.
