Summary

The MWC Grand Prize Winner replaced a questionable image in their winning entry after it was revealed that the original image violated the challenge's rules on proper source attribution.

Abstract

The MWC Grand Prize Winner's entry faced scrutiny when it was discovered that the featured image lacked proper source citation, a requirement for participation in the challenge. Following an article highlighting the copyright issue, the image was replaced with one that included the necessary attribution within 24 hours. This incident has raised questions about the rules governing post-challenge modifications to entries, with no explicit guidelines found in the official Medium challenge rules. However, it was noted that Medium and contest sponsors reserve the right to modify entries after submission.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that the missing attribution in the original winning post should have disqualified it from the challenge.
  • There is an implication that the replacement of the image was a response to the public highlighting of the copyright problem.
  • The author questions whether it is permissible for winners to alter their entries after the conclusion of the challenge.
  • The author points out that while specific rules about post-challenge changes by winners are not clear, Medium and sponsors have the authority to modify entries.

48 hours ago, I wrote “The MWC Grand Prize Winner Has a Copyright Problem”. The main issue was a missing source citation for the featured image of the overall winner. This missing attribution should have excluded the post from the challenge as the proper citation was a rule for entering the challenge.

24 hours ago, 1 day after my post, the image of this winning post has been replaced with another image and proper source attribution.

This replacement raises another important question.

Are the winners of the challenge allowed to change their entries after the challenge has ended?

I couldn’t find specific information about this in the official Medium challenge rules. What I found, though, was that Medium (and contest sponsors) are allowed to modify entries afterward.

This means Medium themselves changed the image?
