WRITING PROMPT
Music & Memoir Writing Prompt
Let a song take you on a creative journey

Memoirists,
Do I have a treat for you…a fun new prompt! YAY, PROMPTS!
For this inspirational prompt, I wanted to do something a little different. Much like how the 100-word memoirs showed us how we could craft beautiful, engaging stories without all the fluff, I thought it would be cool to do a sensory prompt and see what great stories are born from it.
Prompt Guidelines
- Try to begin with a fresh slate, blank mind.
- Pick a song. A song you like, a song you hate, a song that always hits you when you hear it, a song you haven’t heard in a long time, a song that makes you laugh — anything. But it should be one you know well and always brings about a reaction in you — whether it is singing it in your car if you hear it, having to turn it off or turn it up super loud, or if it makes you sad…you get the point. I think I need to practice my 100-word writing. Ha!
- Open a new page to begin writing, and play the song. Put it on repeat if you must. Close your eyes and listen to the song. Let the song transport you to the place. The person. The thing. The memory. And let your fingers dance.
- Title your piece like this: “Name of song: Follow up personal bit about the story” (For example: My Lips Are Sealed: The Time My Dog Ate My Lipstick)
- Please include the tag: music memoir
I’m looking forward to seeing all the great work from this one!
XO—Ki
