ILLUMINATION CHALLENGE 100 — DAY 7
Murder Mystery at Sapphire Beach
Exploring the Cozy Mystery Genre
In this post, I am exploring the genre “Cozy Mysteries” or “Armchair Mysteries”. This is my entry for the #ABCBookReviewChallenge where I explore one literary technique for every letter of the alphabet.
Today G = Genre. Mysteries, to be specific.
As a change, I am reviewing the “Sapphire Beach mystery series” by author Angela K Ryan, a series with 11 books so far. (instead of a single book). I read 7 books in this series and they were all delightful!
Joys of Bargain Booksy
I initially heard about this author via the sales email newsletter from Bargain Booksy, a list of new ebooks at discounted rates (under five dollars). If you are a self-published author, you should definitely consider advertising on them as a reader. (No affiliation, although I did advertise my book with them with good results)
Anyway, I found the first three books as a bundle via this newsletter and loved them so much that I kept buying more at full price!
Beach Full of Murder
The books are all set in Sapphire Beach, Florida, which may or may not be a fictional beach given how real the descriptions feel! You might wonder how many murders and crimes can exist in a single location, but the plotlines are brought in seamlessly and it never feels forced or gory.
Overall, it’s a nice light read, with a tiny thread of Christian faith interspersed here and there. Side thread, the heroine runs a souvenir and jewelry store which she handcrafts. There is also mention of selling Fair Trade jewelry made by artisans in Africa, so there is a hint of volunteering and promoting charitable causes.
Fast-Paced or Formulaic?
Unlike most mysteries and thrillers, this book does not show police personnel to be incompetent. In fact, the heroine’s love interest is the local police officer. The love interest is just enough to be interesting without becoming a full-blown chick-lit romance.
In that sense, the books seem a little formulaic — light love interest, a clue (or murder) every 10 pages to keep the readers engaged! Personally, the story was fast-paced that I did not really mind if the writer is using some templatized playbook, but it might annoy some readers.
Perfect Gift
If you are not in the mood for anything intellectual or heavy, then these books will be the perfect answer. They will also make good gifts for young adult readers and for folks who don't read a lot.
If you read some of the shorter stories by Agatha Christie, or if you’ve seen the television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, then you’ll definitely like these books as well.
Other than the famous Sherlock Holmes or Poirot series, do you know any other cozy mystery authors that you would like to recommend? Answer in the comments section below.
