Murder in the Vegas Hotel
When a tourist gets murdered, it’s bad for business
Mary Wilson, not her real name, works undercover. Sometimes, under the covers as well. She had been an Off-Broadway actress when the FBI had recruited her to “assist with their investigation” for the New York City mob. Her career took a left turn after that.
Now days, she’s stationed in Las Vegas, working for Homeland Security following foreign terrorists. The tourist haven is adjacent to the atomic bomb test site; thus, it’s also a haven for spies.
Mary had been following Oscar Cross, also not his real name. She didn’t know who had killed him. Cross had been with a woman, but Mary was not certain she had murdered him. Mary had cleaned up the hotel room in the aftermath, removing all traces of Mr. Cross’s treasonous activities.
“I like to have a good time,” Mary said, answering the detective’s question. “I met a guy earlier. He was married and didn’t want his friends to see him with me. So, we went up separately. That man,” she pointed to the photo, “got off the elevator at the same time. I didn’t pay attention to where he went.”

Detective Bill Maxwell is an ambitious, young detective recently assigned to the Las Vegas Homicide division. While investigating the murder of a tourist, the fingerprint of a local prostitute is found in the room. Additionally, video of Mary Wilson in the elevator with Mr. Cross only hours before the murder has given them reason to question her.
Bill’s a good detective, but he is rather obsessed with the active sex life of his divorced partner, Danny. While Bill has a crush on the forensics tech, Susan, he’s not yet made it to home plate with her. With romance on his mind, it’s easy for Mary to convince him she’s not involved.
“Her story seems to hold together, but it’s too damn odd,” Bill said to Danny. “I think she talks like she’s a cop. She knows too much about just exactly when to tell the truth, and when to lie. I think she knows what happened on that floor. Notice how she never once asked what crime you were investigating? More to the point, I think she clearly knows what we already know, and what we don’t.”
