Mumbai Street Food: Magic or Memories?
Writing Prompts: Fabulous Food Memories

Walking down the lane
Either with family or some friends,
At the food carts- our journey
Both begins and ends.
Quick helpings served with deft hands.
Their many scents and colors entice
The tantalizing flavors and textures
Of stuffed bread and puffed rice.
Fried balls stuffed with goodness
Dipped in juices spicy, sour and sweet
Desserts galore to end the meal
Each morsel and memory, a yummy treat!
The phrase “food memories” conjures for me
The bustle of Mumbai, its food stalls.
The magic of spices is potent when blended
With the aroma of many a memory calls.
When I thought of food memories, I got transported back to the street food I enjoyed so much as a kid, a teenager, and a young adult in the streets of Mumbai. I do get some of it here in the US but the “magic” is missing. That joy of stepping out with family, sometimes especially for it other times just because we ‘felt’ like it, with my friends in an impromptu outing, each sharing our favorite spot or with my grandparents as we strolled munching amid giggles and revelations. It’s not just the local ingredients or the seasoned hands (pun intended) but also that lure of nostalgia that makes them special.
Thanks for an amazing theme of Fabulous Food Memories- it offered me a way to revisit many moments gorging on street foods in my beloved hometown.
Food truly does connect and act as a conduit to make and revisit memories!
