Multi-tasking with Audiobooks
Thank You Notes Prompt #32
I must say that I came very late to the audiobook craze. I resisted it for a long time because I love the feel of a book in my hands.
I also didn’t think that narrators could do a book justice. In my mind, it was going to be similar to when a book is turned into a movie — it was going to lack something.
While I have noticed not all narrators are equal, I now enjoy multi-tasking with audiobooks. It is a way to squeeze more “reading” into my day.
Did I mention I love books? I have so many books that I have run out of space on my bookshelves. Especially in winter, I can curl up and read a book all day long. Unfortunately, household chores and other commitments can’t always be put on hold while I am wrapped up in the lives of these characters.
I now love to wash dishes or fold laundry while listening to an audiobook. This makes my chores a lot more fun! It also seems to make them go by faster. So really it is more than just multi-tasking, adding an audiobook to my day helps me get more done in a set amount of time.
I am so thankful for my Overdrive and Hoopla subscriptions through my local library. I have so many audiobooks at my fingertips! It makes me happy just thinking about the possibilities.
I have also requested a few books on CD that weren’t available in the audiobook library. What can I say? I am now a firm believer in the power of an audiobook.
There are some books I have found difficult to read such as a dry self-help book. However, the audiobook version has been a way for me to get through the book in a more user-friendly way.
Since the start of the pandemic, I have listened to a lot of non-fiction books. They are usually full of good information, and I feel like I am improving myself by learning from them.
Another benefit to audiobooks is that my gigantic TBR book pile is shrinking a lot faster. I’m not sure if I am getting through a book faster than I would be by reading it, but I often have an audiobook checked out while also reading another book. Getting through two books at a time is amazing. My TBR pile doesn’t look as daunting anymore.
Yes, I still read physical books and e-books too, but audiobooks have become essential for me. It is definitely a way that I use to treasure my time. I can’t believe I went so long without trying an audiobook. It just shows that you should try new things more often because you might find that you like them and that they are beneficial to you.
Thank you for reading. I wrote this article in response to Trista Signe Ainsworth’s prompt Treasured Time.
I know many people who listen to audiobooks while at work, when commuting, or doing chores.
Do you multitask with an audiobook? If so, when do you work audiobooks into your schedule? Do you have any audiobook favorites? I would love to hear some recommendations.
