Muir Woods Giant Redwoods
How It Feels To Meet A 600-Year-Old Tree
If you are a certified tree hugger or just a curious tourist looking to see the sights on vacation, a visit to Muir Woods will blow your mind. It is a destination trip you will never forget.
You will see and feel the majesty of these towering redwood trees, these giants of the forest, up close and personal. They are a living demonstration of nature’s ability to awe and inspire us. They are the tallest trees in the world.
Located just north of San Francisco, Muir Woods is a designated national monument. It was created in order to preserve the giant redwood trees from being chopped down for lumber. This was a common practice in the past by the short-sighted logging industry.
I have visited them myself more than once, and they have never failed to amaze me with their sheer size and majesty. Most of the trees in Muir Woods are over 600 years old and are over 250 feet tall. This is the same height as a 25-story building.
Imagine trees that have been growing since the 1400s! The trees are readily visible as you enter the park since they tower over everything else.
There is a majesty and a grandeur to these trees that you can feel as you walk along the miles of hiking trails. You can sense the power and permanency of nature and the transient nature of our human lives compared to them.
The trees have a powerful, magnetic attraction for most people. They are awe-inspiring in their magnitude and seem to have a presence that you can both taste and feel deep inside your soul.
The aroma of the giant trees and the surrounding wooded area as you hike the many trails that wend their way through Muir Woods is an unforgettable experience. You can absorb the power of nature in its own environment, untouched by the ravages of science and politics that rule our everyday lives.
When you crane your neck to observe the sheer height of these trees you are overwhelmed by their quiet strength and their innate sense of rugged natural presence. It is a truly amazing, one-of-a-kind feeling.
The serenity and grandeur of these majestic specimens of nature is a palpable emotion. It is moving, it is emotional, it is awe-inspiring. They seem like sentient creatures, and maybe in their own way, they are. Who knows?
Contrast the beauty and natural power of these living giants in their natural habitat to the sterile concrete canyons most of us live our daily lives negotiating. Our daily commutes, our trips to go shopping or out to restaurants or appointments pale in significance by comparison.
I personally felt their power. It was like it was derived from another time, another place. When America was a pristine natural paradise instead of a collection of artificial lines on the map dividing and demarcating our present collection of quarreling red and blue states.
When you slowly walk amidst them, a sense of peace and inner tranquility takes over your whole being. What better place to meditate and ponder the mystery of life than in Nature’s own cathedral of natural magnificence?
Because of its immense popularity and intense magnetism, you will need to make reservations for both parking and admittance in advance to visit Muir Woods. It is easily reached by car or tour buses and you can spend 2–3 hours hiking along the scenic trails without even noticing it.
If you are able to make the pilgrimage to this shrine of nature, I urge you to do so. It will be an unforgettable memory. The experience is unlike anything else.
If you get the opportunity, seize it. You will never regret it.
