Summary

MuddyUm is hosting an art contest to find a mascot for their publication, with a top prize of $100 and the opportunity for artists to be featured and potentially join their team.

Abstract

MuddyUm, inspired by the likes of MAD Magazine and National Lampoon, is calling for artist submissions for a new mascot. The contest offers a 100 prize for the winning entry, with 50 and $35 for second and third places, respectively. All submissions will be showcased in an upcoming article, and the winner will be decided by a panel of MuddyUm's existing writers. The contest is open for entries until the end of 2019, and the artwork of the winners will be used for promotional purposes with due credit given to the artists. Submissions can be made via a published article on MuddyUm, by becoming a contributor, or through email, with the expectation that winners have an active PayPal, Venmo, or Cash app account for the prize money.

Opinions

  • The contest is inspired by the legacy of lampooning publications and the iconic Alfred E. Neumann of MAD Magazine.

  • There is a sense of camaraderie and playfulness, with references to a "secret pirate ship tree fort" for writers and the idea of poking fun at the publication itself.
  • The contest is seen as an opportunity for exposure and potential collaboration with MuddyUm, beyond just the monetary prize.
  • The publication values humor and creativity, aiming to make reading "fun again" and inviting artists to contribute to this mission.
  • Susan Brearley, a strategist and editor associated with MuddyUm, is humorously described as having recently ventured into writing comedy.

The idea for a mascot comes from MAD Magazine. When we started MuddyUm, we were thinking about MAD. And National Lampoon. And other lampooning publications, too many to list here. Though we all do love listicles. And lampooning of them. And poking fun at ourselves and the mother ship.

And do you remember that MAD had a mascot? Alfred E. Neumann. “What, me worry?” was his slogan.

So sort out your calendars. We’ll be taking entries until the last day of 2019.

Award will be paid out of MuddyUm editor earnings. Okay, well MY personal editor earnings. That’s how much faith I have in this publication.

Submit entries via a published article and design on M*d*um. Or ask to be a contributor here at MuddyUm. Or if you are shy, email me at [email protected]. Comment on this article to let me know it’s coming by email. A panel of judges of existing writers in our secret pirate ship tree fort for MuddyUm writers only will vote on the winners.

First place will receive $100. Second will receive $50. Third will receive $35. Honorable mentions and all entries will be featured in an article in January, 2020. MuddyUm will retain all future use of winners’ submitted artwork for promotional purposes. Artist credits will always be noted with use.

Winner SHOULD have an active PayPal, Venmo or Cash app account for payment. Or we can send a money order if you don’t have any electronic payment options.

Good luck, and happy creating.
