Moving Through the Seasons

A challenge for all writers.

I love a climate where all four seasons bring the full experience of nature.

The cycle of the Earth feels more powerful to me as I adjust to the changes in the weather and the amount of sunlight light we receive.

Days get shorter and nights get longer as our planet tilts away from the sun. At first, I don’t notice the small changes, but as fall storms approach I realize the sun is setting earlier in the day and rising later in the morning.

As our planet journeys around the sun, the seasons change.

Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

It always reminds me of this beautiful Carole King song. This version is sung by James Taylor. Take a moment and listen with your heart.

The names of the seasons are fairly arbitrary, actually.

Right now I live in a place in Canada that seems to have only three seasons, Spring, Fire, and Wet.

  • Winter is said to have come from an early German word wentruz, which might have come from an old European word that means wet.
  • Spring makes a bit more sense to me, as I can imagine the plants springing from the ground.
  • Summer is said to have come from Old English (sumor) or early Germanic (sumur) and early European (sam).
  • Fall seems to have come from the leaves falling from trees as the season turns.

A fellow editor recently mentioned that he uses different words to name the seasons.

Snow, Tulip, Dragonfly, Leaf

I loved the idea so much, I was inspired to create this challenge.

Here goes.

If you were to name the seasons, what words would you use?

There are only two rules.

  • Tell us your words and write a poem or story for each one. You can combine them all in one story, or spread them out for our enjoyment.
  • If you make up a word, please add some background for your creation.

Thank you Regi Brittain for the inspiration.

This is a year-round challenge, and you can jump in at any time.
