Decisions Following Loss of Loved One
After fifty-five of marriage Julie was now on her own. She felt lonely in her own home as she had never lived alone in her entire life. Now she had to figure out how to move forward.
Robbie, her son, said, “Sell the house and come to live with us.”
Her daughter, Diana, suggested selling the house and trying assisted living. Diana’s apartment was too small for one more person.
Julie was walking slowly in her neighborhood when Susan waved to her from the porch. “How are you doing, Julie?”
“Okay, Susan.”
Julie just kept walking as she didn’t want to get into a conversation with anyone right now. She was running her various options through her mind. She didn’t really want to live with Robbie as she felt it would be too difficult for Robbie and his wife, not to mention the grandchildren.
As she walked back into her home the phone was ringing. “Hello.”
“Hey Mom. How are you doing? Have you made any decision?”
“No, Diana. Not yet.”
“I don’t like the idea of you living alone. What if you fall?”
“That’s why I have a medical alert necklace. Just give me a little time. This is a big decision.” She was becoming annoyed with the pressure from her children to move.
Julie was still grieving the loss of her husband. She missed him all the time. She loved their home and didn’t want to leave it. They had the house built during the first year of their marriage.
The next morning Julie’s old college roommate called. “Hi Mary.”
“Hi Julie. I’ve been wondering how you are doing?”
“Oh, you know me very well Mary. I miss John all the time. The kids are pushing me to move, and I really don’t want to.”
“That’s one reason I called Julie. I’m moving back to town and I wanted to see you.”
“Sure, when will you be here?”
“Tomorrow. Can I pick you up for lunch tomorrow at about 11:30 AM?”
“Sure thing.”
As they sat eating their salads the next day Julie asked, “Have you bought a house or found a place to live, Mary?”
“No, not yet. I have an appointment with the realtor later today.”
“Mary, why don’t you come and live with me. I have plenty of room” she said with a big smile.
