Motivations for a Struggling Newbie Writer
I am a brand new writer to the Medium Partner Program in 2020
I have now become a member of the Medium Partner Program for all of two days. And I am already questioning my intentions. Do I have the tenacity and the persistence to carry on? Is it unusual to want to give up when I am only on my third day? Am I doomed to failure when I haven’t even really started? Do I want to succeed on Medium bad enough or is this just going to be a short term stint?
I am actually really late to Medium. I decided to join the bandwagon because I have heard so many people talk about it and to be honest, I wouldn’t mind the extra pocket money. I am not going to pretend that money doesn’t matter. I do want to make money from Medium although I am realistic enough to know that I won’t be making thousands of dollars. I have already read the stats about Medium and it is quite depressing. Only 6.2% of active writers earned over $100 in 2020. I assume that I will earn almost nothing the first few months and that it will be an accomplishment if I hit the $100 mark. So let's see where this goes.
How Am I Going to Stay Motivated?
Well, I have paid my $5 Medium membership dues (actually the first month is free) so that I can read as many articles as I can about writing on Medium. There is a ton of great advice for new writers on Medium. The writing tips are meaningful and are as inspiring as any of Tony Robbins’s motivational quotes. I take them to heart and they are all I have to keep me going for now. I found a few of the tips especially inspirational and relevant for a newbie writer and I wanted to share them with all of you fellow newbies out there.
Motivational Tip #1: Give It At Least Six Months.
This is from Medium writer Sergey Faldin who talks about the six-month rule. He says: It’s simple: if you start something, stick to it for six months without thinking, judging yourself, or quitting (Sergey Faldin).
I can follow the six-month-rule. The trick is to keep your expectations minimal. I am already doing it with the Quora Partner Program. For those of you who don’t know, the Quora Partner Program is somewhat similar to the Medium Partner Program except that you get paid for writing questions and the more interactions, answers and views you have on your questions, the better chances you have of earning any money. I am on the third month of consistently writing quality questions and answers on Quora and my earnings are pitiful but I can’t give up quite yet. I am going to stick to it for another three months before deciding the next course of action.
Motivational Tip #2: Write Without Worrying About the Money.
This tip is from Medium writer, Vishnu’s Virtues. He writes “You write on Medium for all the things that are important to you. You find any other reason other than money to get you motivated and give you meaning” (Vishnu’s Virtues).
This simply means we should detach ourselves from any expectations that our writings should make a certain amount of money. I am going to be honest here and say that Medium is probably not the place to be in for anyone who is in dire need of an income. From all accounts, this is a place for the long haul and it could very well be a slow and tortuous process to making any sort of income. The exception would be the one-in-a-million superstar who is already earning thousands in their first month but this obviously won’t apply to most of us.
Motivational Tip #3: Follow Your Own Schedule and Pace of Writing.
Writing isn’t going to be the same for everyone. Medium writer Estacious (Charles White) says it all “Writing is not one size fits all”. Some may be comfortable writing and publishing everyday while others may want to take a little more time with their writing.
This last tip is a little controversial if you want to succeed on the platform. The majority of top Medium writers say that it is important to write prolifically. Some writers even stress that you should write everyday and there are quite a few articles on how Medium writers have found success by publishing at least one article every single day. In that case, the recommendation would be for a Medium writer to write a minimum of 30 articles in a month if they want to make significant headway.
Personally, I am not sure that I could write 30 articles in a month unless I didn’t care about the quality. I am also not at the point where I want to devote my time exclusively to Medium. After all, I am trying to work on other side businesses because you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. I think the key here is to find the balance between quality and quantity. Publish as often as you can within your limit.
The Takeaway
For a newbie writer on Medium, there are literally hundreds of articles on how to write for the platform. I have not found one bad article on this subject. The tips are all supposed to be helpful but you have to sift through all the chaff and select what works for you. The tips I have included in this article should just be a general starting point for anyone new to Medium. So let’s all make a commitment to stick to the program for at least six months, not worry too much about the money, and enjoy the process of writing.
