Motivation is overrated, and consistency is underrated

Why Doing It Every Day Matters More

We are at the beginning of the year, and as usual, people will set goals for 2024.

Of course, the motivation jar is full at the beginning of the year. People have the energy to work on their goals; some people’s mantra is: “New year, New habits”.

But as the year evolves, the jar of motivation gets emptier, and it becomes more and more challenging to continue working on the goal. Now, people start to have excuses and comfort their minds that not working on their goal is not that bad.

That is why we can’t rely only on motivation; there are too many factors that can have an impact on our motivation.

I have always known and internalised the fact that motivation is overrated. And that the real challenge is to be consistent. Consistency is hard, especially when a system is not set up objectively and optimally. Because to achieve a goal, we have to set up a system that helps achieve the goals. This includes daily routine, environment, sleep and other factors.

As a human, I have also needed more consistency and procrastination, and I have tried to read about how to be more consistent and not rely on my motivation.

I found that some people who are more consistent fall into two categories:

  • Driven and ambitious: the type of entrepreneur who wants to change the world and they become naturally without any friction constant even when things become tough
  • Those who are determined not to stay in the same place (mentally, financially,..) in the months or years ahead. These categories are less attached to the result but are in love with the progress. For example, they’ll appreciate that last month they couldn’t run a kilometre without taking a break, and now they can do it and are still enthusiastic about what they will be able to do in the future. Even if the goal here was to lose weight, changing the paradigm or perception has made the journey more joyful, and it is a good philosophy.

Life is a long run, and it is essential to make everything small things that can help get closer to the goal. When we set goals, we must build habits to achieve these goals. Making it simple is the solution, and also doing everything at different moments. It is essential to be aware that a year is composed of a month; each month has weeks, each week has days, and each day has 24 hours. So, making it possible is accessible to each of us if we try to show up even though we are tired. The joy lies at the end of the tunnel.

Final Thoughts

Making small daily steps is more important than doing nothing or even doing it more quickly and living it.
