Mother Nature’s Welcome Mat
The green carpet announces the arrival of Spring

I went to one of my favorite hiking areas this week. A rare warm sunny day after many cold and dreary days of winter. It is a wildlife preserve that is kind of hidden and not many people go there. That allows some grass to grow on the trails.
Winter is still here. It is not going to fade away quietly. Barren gray trees with no leaves. Brown grass and brown fallen leaves cover the ground. The air is still cold, but the afternoons are starting to warm up.
It was as if Mother Nature had rolled out the green carpet for me to walk on, to say that spring is coming.
Winters are usually harsh here on the plains. This year was not as bad as usual, but there were plenty of days in the 20s and gray skies.
The sunshine is returning. The green grass is returning. Spring is almost here. We are in that strange time of year when it may be 70 one day and 30 the next.
The trails are where I leave the world behind. It no longer exists as long as the trail lasts, or until it gets dark and I have to go home. It’s where I see God most clearly.
Spring is almost here. Birds are singing and soon animals will come out of hibernation. Patches of green line the path. There are small blades of grass that will soon reveal wildflowers.
Life returns to the wilderness, and it gives me life as well.
