Most Medium Followers are Foragers

Photo by Viktor Forgacs on Unsplash

I started writing on Medium in November 2018 and 8 months later, I have 398 Followers and I am following 231.

What’s with the bragging rights at having a record number of Followers?

Sometimes I feel that some of my Followers are stalking me, in terms of reading some of my content and maybe coming back for more ideas or words…which maybe, just perhaps — -who knows?

Is anyone out there using any of my content in their blog posts or on other online channels of their own.

Thoughts about plagiarism and lurkers rear in my mind. 😲

Come on, guys and gals, if you Follow me, is it because you have read one of my stories, and if you have, why did you NOT like it enough to interact??

I’m sure that all Medium writers would appreciate claps or a positive, nice response or some highlighting of their content, for a recent or an older published Story. 😃

When I got to 230 writers that I am following, I came to a screeching halt.

Whoah, I said to myself, enough is enough, if I am to honour these writers.

For every one of these writers, I found and read at least one of their Stories and interacted with at least one Story.

Because I really got something from the Story, I decided to hit the Follow button, you know, just in case….I may return one day to their Profile page or take an interest in something new of theirs in my Newsfeed.

Or not …

Of all my roughly 400 followers to date, I can count on one hand the number of them who clap for or interact with a few of my Stories.

This makes me think that new people are joining Medium all the time and somehow finding my profile name and hitting the Follow button.

There are reasons why people follow on Medium, of course.

  • Some actually follow simply in the hopes that you will follow them back.

If you are following me with this hope, well, you are well advised to un-follow me right now. If a Follower follows me, she/he will have to show that she/he has read and appreciates one of my Stories, for me to follow back.

Quid pro quo (a favour or advantage gained in return for something)

  • Some follow for the reason that I do, as I explained above.
  • Many, I conclude, are passing through and browsing. These may come across your Profile on Medium by seeing it because you clap or respond to a Story, or may click on a link to one of your Stories (discovered who knows how). They are book marking your Profile for possible future visits.

I have made up my mind that there are a lot of Medium browsers who sort of scan the fields of available stories/content/resources to get a taste of what it is that they prefer.

Perhaps they are scouting the terrain, for resources to assist them, never mind the other way around — them assisting you.

I would love to know how many of the Followers of Medium writers who have a thousand or more followers actually interact with most of their Stories.

Rather than be a sticky-beak and start analysing such for the top earners and top writers on Medium, I have started laboriously going through the Profiles of all those whom I am following.

Each evening I will browse through their Stories and then make up my mind whether to keep following them or not.

I also have the good old Bookmark function of my browser, or the possibility of using a text document, to record the URLS of other writers whom I may like to follow.

Before anyone reading this gets on their “high horse” crying something like “So what if 398 people are following you, be appreciative, give people a chance” etc. etc. the take-away from this rumination is that Followers on Medium don’t necessarily translate to overt shows of appreciation of any of your Stories.

Speaking for myself, I would love a handful of die-hard Followers on Medium, whom interact with 99% of my Stories.

Maybe I need to do some foraging myself, to find them.
