More than 150 Apps Powering the Gig Economy

The transition to Gig Economy is gathering pace with the technology enablers

The Future of Work is undergoing a fundamental change. Enabled & empowered by technology & embraced by Generation Z — a demographic who were born between 1995–2009 & who will form the biggest chunk of U.S workforce by 2020. While Gig Economy is traditionally defined as a temporary arrangement of work when you are in between jobs — your side gig so to say, it is becoming a mainstay for an increasing number of people.

The rise of smartphones, unlimited high-speed internet & the emergence of e-commerce portals & online players like Uber, Lyft, Etsy, Amazon, Freelancer.com, eBay, Airbnb has fueled the rise of this “Gig economy.”

According to Upwork Research, in the U.S alone there are about 57 million people freelancing as of 2018, an increase of 3.7 million people in the last 4 years, accounting for 36% of the workforce. With 61 million Generation Zers entering the workforce in the next decade or so, the size of the Gig economy is all set to overtake the traditional workforce by 2027.

While the Gig Economy offers independence, flexibility & increased productivity — the traditional employment structure brings stability of income & employment benefits, etc. A lot of people still debate the merits & demerits of the transitioning economy. Going forward, however, the size of the Gig Economy is only going to get bigger with technology enablers mentioned before.

Companies are already adapting to this transition as they can bring in the newer top talent pool to solve specific problems without the burden of giving them added employment benefits, while the Gig workers would love the flexibility & time-specific tasks after which they can move to another project at their discretion and availability.

Who would have thought that just a decade ago that you can earn money by just using an App on your smartphone? The Gig culture adoption is showing exponential growth. The expanding ecosystem as you can see in the infographic below is providing ample choices & opportunities for anyone who is willing to avail it.
