More Help Tips For New Writers On Medium
A How-To article
I recently wrote an article for new writers giving you a checklist of things to help you navigate Medium, but I remembered I should mention a few things. This How-To will address those issues. You can view the original post here:
How To Submit Your Stories To A Publication
I get asked this question frequently. First, be sure you have asked to be a writer and have been added to the publication. The best answer for how to submit your stories is to conduct Medium’s Help section. The specific How-To article is here:
How To Turn On Private Notes
If you’ve joined a publication, you may have seen that the editor has asked you to turn on your Private Notes. Where in the world can you find that? It’s simple. Follow these instructions:
- Click on your icon on your home page.
- Click on Settings.
- Click on Publishing.
- Make sure the box is checked beside ‘Allow readers to leave private notes on your stories’.
How To Single-Space A Poem
This is only briefly mentioned in a Medium’s Help article, so I will give the details here:
When you reach the end of a line of poetry, hold down the Shift key and hit Enter. This will bring the space down one time. Do this for each new line. When you are ready to make a stanza break, just hit Enter. This will bring the space down two lines. Rinse and repeat until your poem is complete.
What Images Can You Use For Reviews?
This includes Books, Movies, TV shows, etc.
Book Reviews — unless you have permission from the author of a book, you cannot use the image of that book cover. It does not matter if you take a picture of the cover. It is copyrighted material and cannot be used. Choose a FREE image that closely resembles what the book is about and properly cite it with a link to the original creator of the image and where you found it. You can always add a link to the book from a site like Amazon, so the reader of your review can have a look at the book cover.
Movies & TV shows — You cannot use the movie or tv show’s cover image in your review. It is copyrighted material. Like with book reviews, you can choose a FREE image that closely resembles what the movie or tv show is about and add a link to the movie or tv show somewhere in your review.
Where To Find Free Image Sites
For a list of free image sites, check out this article. If you are an MPP member earning money from your stories, your stories are now ‘commercialized’. So if you come across a site that says their images are only for ‘non-commercialized’ use, you cannot use them for a story behind the paywall.
You can also create your images. Here are some AI-generated art programs you can try. Remember that some of these may cost a fee to upgrade for extra options.
I hope this helps with some of the most asked questions I’ve received from new writers. If you have a question I have not addressed in my previous article (link above) or this article, drop me a comment.
