Summary

For October, the website Promptly Written invites writers to explore the theme "Things that go bump in the night," encouraging creativity in various forms of writing centered around spooky elements.

Abstract

The website Promptly Written has announced its monthly theme for October, which is "Things that go bump in the night." This theme is chosen to be inclusive of those who celebrate Halloween and those who do not, focusing on elements like ghost stories, horror, nightmares, and folklore creatures such as vampires and werewolves. Writers are encouraged to submit poetry, fiction up to 1000 words, personal essays, creative non-fiction, articles, or opinion pieces that align with the theme. The website provides "Writing Sparks" to inspire specific works related to the theme and advises contributors to tag their work with the hashtag #monthlytheme for better visibility. The goal is to let writers' imaginations run wild with the scariness of the night, offering a broad spectrum of the supernatural and eerie for creative exploration.

Opinions

  • The theme is deliberately chosen to be inclusive and user-friendly for all participants, regardless of whether they celebrate Halloween.
  • Writers are encouraged to let their imaginations go wild, suggesting a preference for creative and boundary-pushing content within the spooky theme.
  • The use of the #monthlytheme tag is recommended but not mandatory, indicating a balance between thematic unity and individual expression.
  • The inclusion of "Writing Sparks" demonstrates a supportive approach to inspire writers and provide a starting point for their thematic explorations.

For the month of October, the theme here at Promptly Written will be

Things that go bump in the night

When I think of October, Halloween comes to mind. However, I do know that not everyone celebrates this holiday. So to keep this user-friendly for all involved, I’ve set the theme to be things that go bump in the night — ghost stories, horror, nightmares, vampires, werewolves, witches, other cryptos, folk tales, etc. You can write poetry, fiction up to 1000 words, a personal essay, creative non-fiction, an article or even an opinion piece (Op-Ed). Let your imagination go wild and explore all the scariness of the night.

How To Use Monthly Themes

  1. Write specific poems, fiction, essays or articles related to the theme — try using the Writing Sparks.
  2. Choose a Daily or Weekly prompt, or select a Writing Spark, and center your piece around the theme.
  3. Remember to tag your work appropriately and if you wish, use #monthlytheme as one of your tags if your work is centered around the theme.

Writing Sparks

  1. Write a ghost story where the ghost is the protagonist who haunts a local hangout. Give your ghost a unique quality.
  2. Write a poem or story about a nightmare.
  3. Give your personal perspective on what the month of October means to you.
  4. Write an article about anything related to the theme.

Enjoy! ~Ravyne Hawke~
