Monthly Theme For May

Nurturing Ourselves and Others

Photo by Jordan Whitt on Unsplash

For the month of May, the theme here at Promptly Written will be

Nurturing ourselves and others

May is always a favorite time of year for me. It harkens back to when I was a practicing Wiccan and celebrated Beltane, or as some call it, May Day — a pagan fertility festival. However, May is also the time of year that I begin to see baby animals running about. It reminds me of the nurturing nature of the animal kingdom, of which we humans are a part.

I am currently in isolation because I have Covid, so one of my greatest pleasures at the moment is looking out my window and watching a nest of bluejays (and praying my cat doesn’t get to them!). The mother bluejay is so attentive toward her chicklings. Just this morning, one of the babes left the nest for the first time.

While watching these lovely creatures, it got me to thinking about two holidays in May that we here in the US celebrate — Mothers’ Day and Memorial Day. Both holidays honor those who care for and nurture us. So I decided to make Nurture the theme for the entire month of May.

My hopes is that with the Monthly Theme and the Writing Sparks, you will embrace all things Nurturing.

How To Use Monthly Themes

  1. Write specific poems, fiction, essays, or articles related to the theme — try using the Writing Sparks.
  2. Choose a Daily or Weekly prompt, or select a Writing Spark, and center your piece around the theme.
  3. Remember to tag your work appropriately and also use ‘Monthly Theme’ as one of your tags if your work is centered around the theme.

Writing Sparks

  1. Write a poem or essay in honor of someone who has nurtured you. This could be one or both of your parents, a sibling or other family member, a favorite teacher, a religious or spiritual figure, a first responder, or someone in the military. You define what nurturing means to you and who nurtured you.
  2. Write a poem or essay on — How do you nurture yourself?
  3. Write an poem, piece of fiction, essay, or article on — The concept of ‘Nature Vs. Nurture’. Are some people just born good or bad, i.e. Nature? Or is it the extent of or lack of Nurture?
  4. Write a poem or piece of fiction on — Take a look around you. Observe how animals and/or people nurture one another (or do not). Write down all aspects of the scene using as many of your senses as possible. Then create a poem or piece of fiction around your observations.

Have a great May everyone! Take the time to nurture yourself and others this month. And please, do not stress yourselves out by attempting to keep up with the writing prompts here at PW. They will be available whenever the inspiration strikes!
