Monthly Theme For January 2023

New beginnings for a new you

Welcome to Promptly Written for a new monthly theme. This month, the theme will be:

New beginnings for a new you.

This January marks two new beginnings — Promptly Written’s new relaunch and new beginnings for a new year for all of us.

I don’t know about you, but I just cannot bring myself to write new year resolutions that I know I will break before the end of January. Instead, I choose a word that I want to concentrate on for the entire year, drawing its energy to me. I also set intentions — goals that I send out to the Universe and allow it to work its magic and bring to fruition when the timing is right.

So no worries, this theme has nothing to do with writing resolutions.

Let’s see if we cannot strike up some amazing stories this month with our Monthly Theme and Writing Sparks!

How To Use Monthly Themes

  1. Write specific poems, fiction, essays, or articles related to the theme — try using the Writing Sparks.
  2. Choose a Weekly prompt or select a Writing Spark, and center your piece around the theme.
  3. Remember to tag your work appropriately and also use ‘Monthly Theme’ as one of your tags if your work is centered around the theme.

Writing Sparks

  1. Write a poem, piece of fiction, or an essay on What Does Newness Smell Like?
  2. Write a spiritual-themed poem or essay on What New Spiritual Practice(s) Can I Bring Into My Own Rituals and/or Traditions To Allow Me To Grow Spiritually This Year?
  3. Discover something completely new or foreign to you and write a poem, essay, or article about it.
  4. Write a poem, essay, or piece of fiction based on this line, “I notice something new about you every time we meet.”

Bonus Prompt: Tell us about your goals or intentions for this upcoming year. This can be resolutions if that is your practice.

I hope you’ve all had a Happy New Year. And may you take the time to discover something new this month. Please, do not stress yourselves out by attempting to keep up with the writing prompts here at PW. They will be available whenever the inspiration strikes! Happy January!
