Opinions

  • The author seems to find humor in the misfortune of the traveler, as indicated by the playful description of the monkeys' actions.
  • There is an underlying tone of irony in the traveler's predicament, as he is portrayed as unprepared and oblivious to the warnings, which the author implies could have prevented the incident.
  • The lifeguard's absence is noted with mild criticism, suggesting that the lack of supervision contributed to the traveler's plight.
  • The monkeys are anthropomorphized with mischievous and playful characteristics, as if they are deliberately taunting the traveler for their own amusement.
  • The story concludes with a touch of sarcasm regarding the monkeys' "gift" to the traveler, highlighting the absurdity of the situation.

A good day gone wrong

Two monkeys jumped off a tree, And sat atop a fence overlooking a stream.

Silently they watched children playing water games, And other tourists sunbathing by the shore.

They looked like they’d done this before. Scanning a familiar place, deviously planning, Looking for unknowing prey.

On comes a traveler, casually trekking, With sunshades on as dark as night, Music in his ears, Oblivious to what lies in front of him.

He looked so merry, With a smile as bright as the shining sun.

Traveler’s got in his right hand, a bunch of ripened berries, His left is equally full, with the most sumptuous bananas.

Clearly he hadn’t read the warning signs. It read, BEWARE OF MONKEYS. NO FOOD ALLOWED.

It also didn’t help him, that the lifeguard was nowhere to be seen. — Gone for a smoke I suppose. I’m guessing you can tell where this story’s going, Keep reading though, there’s a slight twist at the end.

Two monkeys sternly watched, eyes fixed on oncoming target, Must’ve been salivating when they first saw him, Probably couldn’t believe their luck.

Patiently observing, they traced the path that’ll lead him To the spot of the destined robbery. As this jolly fellow approached, Two monkeys were quick of a wall, And with the speed of a lightning bolt, They’d snatched away his lunch.

His sunshades fell off his face, He really didn’t know what hit him, He looked up with wonderous amusement, And two monkeys were back on a wall, Hungrily eating what was previously his.

It wasn’t enough it seemed, To rid the man of his wares. They mocked him as they ate, Oo-oo ahh-ahh, scratching armpits and all, Even throwing some banana peels his way.

They must’ve thought it wasn’t enough, To steal his food and taunt him. For they followed this poor victim, Jumping from tree to fence and back to tree. Hollering in the process, seemingly intent on annoying him.

He made his way to his car, And whilst fishing through his pockets, searching for his keys, Two monkeys jumped off a tree and landed on his sunroof. He must’ve been taken by surprise, For instead of chasing them away, He jumped back in freight and began running towards the help desk, Possibly went to look for an aid to do the scaring off for him.

Upon his return, two monkeys where nowhere to be seen, But they left for him a gift to take home right atop his car. Only thing I can say is, it wasn’t colorfully wrapped up. Instead what greeted him was the remnants of his stolen goods, The digested part to clarify.

Thank you for reading.
