Money Is Funny

Money is funny. It’s one of those things that if you have it, you never even think about it. If you don’t have it, then it’s all that you can think about.

Money has been around for at least 5,000 years, according to Google. But while we may not care how long gone ancient civilizations handled their money, everybody cares so much more about money today! It has become an all-consuming obsession for some people. Nowadays, it seems like there’s never enough money for these people.

With inflation raging and stocks vacillating wildly every day because of the economy, even rich people are more worried about money today than they ever did. The covid pandemic has jolted people out of their complacency and age-old attitudes about money like never before.

I have noticed a very stark change in the perception of money these days. It seems that too many people are just losing themselves, losing their souls, in their constant efforts to amass more and more wealth in today’s world. Work hard, harder, and then work some more. I have heard of people working 70–80 hour weeks in their insanely greedy need to make even more money!

These are not people who really need all this money, they just want it. They crave it, they lust for it, some of them will literally kill for it. Some of them even end up killing themselves from overwork pursuing it. They suffer from hypertension, ulcers, heart attacks, stress, and tension in general every day. The difference between need and want is utterly lost on these people. For them, it’s all about just making the money, stacking up the green.

I really do wonder when they have the time to spend their money, to enjoy their newfound wealth. There are only so many days in a week after all. They only care about advancing to the next level of richness, and that is all they really care about. To be richer than everybody else.

The old saying “You can’t take it with you” has never been more applicable in our society, yet people pretend not to notice this basic truth. I have never understood why rich people think they are immortal just because they’re rich. I’m sure they must be secretly counting on buying longevity like any other commodity, but it just doesn’t work that way.

Sure, it’s great to be able to provide a comfortable living for yourself and your family, that is a basic essential and one thing everybody strives to attain. But pictures of these giant yachts, the helicopter pads for guests to arrive and depart, the costs for the crew, and the maintenance we see every day, or those million-dollar rocket trips to outer space, are a slap in the face to normal working people. The richest people are flaunting their wealth more than ever, just because they can.

Most people who live check-to-check, slaving away in low-paying, essential work type jobs or even well-paid union type jobs don’t have the time or energy to keep up with these high-end luxuries that are portrayed all over the media today. All most people want is enough money to get by, to save up a little for vacations, to pay off their bills. There is nothing wrong with that. I am one of them, and sometimes you just have to stop and smell the coffee.

Historically, the richest people have always been the ones with the leisure time and the financial wherewithal to live the good life to the fullest. Many of them believed they were divinely ordained to be rich, and poor people were just there for their exploitation, amusement and pleasure.

None of this is really news, it’s just that with the all-pervasive media wall-to-wall coverage available to us today we get to see more of this extravagance spotlighted. We are now able to compare our daily, mundane fight for a survival type of everyday life to the lifestyles of the rich and famous more than ever before in history.

There is nothing wrong with hard work but the present gap between the very rich and the very poor seems to be widening every day. It doesn’t have to be that way, and it is a puzzle to me why it is happening like that now. Greed has replaced the middle-class goals of a safe, financially secure life with an all-consuming desire for more, always more expensive bright shiny objects.

This is wrong on so many levels, but it is not like a totally new thing. It is just so much more pronounced now than ever before. Greed has always been a basic part of human nature, today more than ever. But you still can’t take it with you. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

It seems some things never change.
