Money Can’t Buy Happiness, But Here’s What It Can Buy

There are many other things we desire in life

How many times have you heard someone saying, “money cannot buy happiness”? As if you’re implying it can. I, as a banker, talk about finances and budgets all the time. Once in a while, I am destined to stumble upon a know-it-all, who would look at me pompously, and proclaim:

“Money can’t buy happiness!”

Thank you, Captain Obvious. Happiness is not a tangible object, like a cake or a laptop. Obviously, you cannot just walk into the store, approach the cashier, and go:

“One pound of happiness, please!”

Money, however, can provide us with different things that are also important in our daily lives. While no one should be focusing on earning cash nonstop, they should consider the benefits money can give them, and the change it will make in their lives.

Philosophers are All Around Us

Over time, I became desensitized to people’s urge to educate me on how little money can buy. As if I ever tried convincing them that earning dollar bills is the ultimate life goal. For some weird reason, certain individuals automatically assume that if you are educating yourself about finances, it’s your only priority.

Why not assume that financiers and accountants try to master the art of budgeting and future planning? By the end of the day, all we’re doing is making sure the chequebook balances, and our families are taking care of.

No one should be focusing on earning cash nonstop, they should consider the benefits money can give them, and the change it will make in their lives.

Money Can Buy Certain Things. What are They?

Money has the ability to acquire non-tangible assets. They provide peace of mind and relief. See the highlights below — they are great examples of how money can benefit your life.

Security

First and foremost, it can buy security. Waking up in the morning and having a roof over your head, food in the fridge, and even the fridge itself is a huge privilege. There are many individuals around the world, both kids and adults, who don’t have such privileges. Some of your neighbors may not even be fortunate enough to have all that. Ensuring that you and your loved ones are financially secure and don’t have to worry about paying rent or mortgage on the 1st of the month is what money can buy.

Not stressing out about unexpected expenses, such as car repairs or medical bills, is also what security represents. If you have an emergency fund, there is no need to worry about sudden difficulties. Having savings and investments, as well as an emergency budget, can protect you from a job loss, family issues, and tragic events — the list goes on.

Money may not be able to give you happiness, but it can absolutely provide you with peace of mind. Living your life and knowing you’re protected, is a reason enough to pay a little bit of attention to your finances.

Endless Freedom

Do you hate your job? A lot of people do, but they choose to continue working. Some may argue it’s not their choice because they have bills to pay. When rent is due, kids need to eat, and the old car will require a new hood soon, you have no choice, but to continue struggling at work.

But what if you were free to do what you want? What if you had enough money to approach your boss and loudly proclaim:

“I quit!”

And then run out of the office? What if you could take your time looking for a new job, the one you actually enjoy? How about having the freedom to work or not work at all? Or simply put, wouldn’t you like the opportunity to abruptly quit your employment, in case it becomes absolutely unbearable?

It may seem like a fairy tale, but it’s a reality for some people. Knowing how to manage your money properly allows you to make decisions unattainable to others. Money cannot buy happiness, but it can buy you total freedom of what you want to do — or not to do! If you wish to pack your bags and move to a different country, you’re free to do that.

Unlimited Hobbies

I love laying in my bed and watching TV shows. I also love traveling and trying new experiences. Even small things like making candles and tasting coffee make me happy. Sadly, I don’t always have the financial opportunity to fully explore my interests. While the candle wax is affordable, traveling all over Asia is currently unattainable for me. I can swing a short trip to Europe, but it would have to be on a tight budget, and I wouldn’t be able to cover all the experiences I desire.

Money can buy you access to all the hobbies you want. Granted, most of us would not be able to afford luxury yachts and private planes, yet slightly more modest pursuits can become a reality. The trick is, many activities make us happy by the end of the day. So, while money cannot buy happiness, it can serve as an instrument to change our lives for the best. It can facilitate a transaction, which will add pleasure to our day.

Living your life and knowing you’re protected, is a reason enough to pay a little bit of attention to your finances.

Future and Time

You cannot buy success, and you can’t guarantee your future with cash. However, money is an essential tool to ensure a far better future. For example, money can buy your formal education, which will allow you a more comprehensive job selection. It will also let you receive higher compensation for your work, and that will give you both security and a perspective to start your own family faster. When you don’t have to work 12 hours a day to make ends meet, you are a proprietor of a much more valuable asset: time.

When you have enough investments to allow yourself to work less — all of a sudden, you have more free time to live. Your present becomes much more interesting, and your future looks brighter.

Money cannot buy happiness, but it can buy you total freedom of what you want to do — or not to do.

You Can Focus on What’s Important

When your basic needs are taken care of, and you are feeling secure, you have the luxury of thinking about what’s actually valuable. On the contrary, if you are obligated to wake up at 4:00 AM and work for 12 hours, all you want to do is drop on the bed and fall asleep.

Figuring out your finances and reducing the need to work day and night allows you to focus on the meaningful things. You can pay more time to your love interest, communicate more with your family and friends, and simply be happier with yourself and your life.

Money may not be able to buy non-material things, but it can surely give you many life benefits. Don’t underestimate the power of money and finances. By the end of the day, it’s merely a tool to shape your life. How you use that tool is entirely up to you.

The current economic crisis is a shiny example of how cash can fix a lot of issues. While there are people who were struggling even before the pandemic, many others could have done a better job building financial security. Losing a job is horrible, but if you have an emergency fund to keep you afloat for 12 months, it’s not as scary.

Money cannot be exchanged for love, happiness, and many other emotions. But it can solve problems and allow you to feel safe and protected.
