Summary

Monday Mash-Up #5 is a writing challenge that provides prompts and constraints to spark creativity, with a leaderboard tracking points from previous challenges.

Abstract

The undefined website presents the fifth edition of the "Monday Mash-Up," a creative writing challenge designed to stimulate authors' imaginations. Participants are invited to select one of two main prompts, which involve inheriting a garden full of gnomes or ghosts falling in love and possessing living bodies. The challenge encourages the inclusion of additional constraints such as assault, licking, dropping, and the involvement of a goat, each worth one point. A hardcore constraint, linking the story to another author's work, is worth two points. Stories must be between 100-1000 words and tagged appropriately for the author to receive points in the next Mash-Up. The website also includes a leaderboard showcasing the top scorers from the previous challenges, with Sweet Chaos, JF Danskin, and Zane Dickens currently tied for first place with 16 points.

Opinions

  • The inclusion of a leaderboard suggests a competitive element to the writing challenge, fostering a sense of achievement and recognition among participants.
  • The prompts and constraints are designed to push writers out of their comfort zones, encouraging them to explore new narrative possibilities.
  • The option to publish on 'The Kraken Lore' or elsewhere indicates a flexible approach to platform and audience, respecting the authors' preferences and potential reach.
  • Encouraging writers to challenge each other and to use the "Mashups" tag promotes community engagement and cross-promotion among writers.
  • The invitation to subscribe to the author's email list, leave a tip on Ko-fi, or join Medium through a referral link implies a desire to build a supportive readership and possibly monetize the writing challenge.

This week’s main theme is: (Worth 2 points, pick one)

You inherit a family member’s home, and their garden full of gnomes. Will they react with open arms or raised pitchforks? Write about the first meeting.

Or

They’ve fallen in love but are unable to touch one another because they’re both ghosts. But what if they were to jump in the body of two people who are alive?

In addition to the main writing prompt, I encourage you to include as many constraints as possible. Each one is worth an additional point!

How many points can you make your story worth?

Constraints: (Worth 1 point each)

  • Someone gets assaulted
  • Something/someone is licked
  • Something/someone is dropped
  • A goat is involved somehow

Hardcore Constraint: (Worth 2 points)

  • A different author’s story is somehow linked to yours

Rules:

  1. Write a story based on one of the main prompts.
  2. Include as many of the constraints in your story as possible.
  3. Keep your story between 100–1000 words.
  4. Use the tag “Mashups” if you like.
  5. Tag me so that I can read it and credit you for points in the next Mash-Up, please!
  6. Challenge your fellow writers.
  7. Publish where ever you want but consider The Kraken Lore.
