Story writing prompts to spark your creativity with a challenge

Image generated by Midjourney

I’ve been amazed by all the responses that have poured in because of the Monday Mash-Ups. The amount of creativity you all have is wonderful! If you would like to browse the entire collection of submissions I have compiled a list of them all.

If you’ve missed a Monday Mash-Up and would like to still submit an entry I’ve put together a list of all the Mash-Up challenges here.

I’ve received several requests for a leaderboard to see who has the most points. I’m sorry I’ve let you down thus far so I now offer you the most up-to-date info board that caffeine addiction can offer, but I have a question for you.

Do we keep an ongoing point total or reset the score at the start of a new month?

Monday Mash-Up Leaderboard (Culmination of Mash-Ups 1 & 2)

1st place: Sweet Chaos 16 points

2nd place: JF Danskin 15 points

3rd place: Rayne Sanning, FJCMontenegro, CK Green and Ginger Bangs tied with 8 points

4th place: Jonathon Sawyer 6 points

5th place: Erin Taylor 5 points

This week’s main theme is: (Worth 2 points)

Your character(s) fall through a mirror and land in a lake of a new universe.

Or

A child brings a beautiful shell home from the beach. “You know, if you put your ear to it, you can hear the ocean,” their mom says. When they put their ear to the shell, they hear much more than that.

In addition to the main writing prompt, I encourage you to include as many constraints as possible. Each one is worth an additional point!

How many points can you make your story worth?

Constraints: (Worth 1 point each)

  • Someone is “a good boy” (A dog, cat, pet, person ect…)
  • Octopus/Squid/Kraken
  • Something that should float sinks
  • Angry bees!
  • Fishing hook/equipment
  • A mouse

Rules:

  1. Write a story based on one of the main prompts.
  2. Include as many of the constraints into your story as possible.
  3. Keep your story between 100–1000 words.
  4. Use the tag “Mashups” if you like.
  5. Tag me so that I can read it and credit you for points in the next Mash-Up, please!
  6. Challenge your fellow writers.
  7. Publish where ever you want but consider The Kraken Lore.

For this Mash-Up I would like to challenge the big dog himself, Zane Dickens. Would love to see what you come up with!
