Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One — Christopher McQuarrie

Quick Summary

In Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most perilous mission yet: to track down a frightening new weapon before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens all humanity.

Control of the future and the fate of the world are at stake. As the dark forces of his past resurface, Ethan embarks on a deadly race around the globe. Confronted by a powerful and enigmatic enemy, Ethan realizes that nothing can stand above his mission — not even the lives of those he loves.

My Thoughts

Yet another Mission Impossible, and we can’t get enough of it, nor of Tom Cruise, who seems to be unstoppable despite the passing years.

This film is just incredible, and there’s hardly a dull moment. I say “almost” because there are a few lulls in the action, caused by the lacklustre dialogue between two action scenes. And overall, all the dialogue lacks depth, but that’s to be expected from a Mission Impossible.

The action scenes are wonderfully realized and very gripping. Some are even highly original. All in all, the production is very well done. Only the essential and the interesting are kept in the film, which is why we have the opportunity to see Tom Cruise cross a continent in the blink of an eye, as well as other shortcuts that aren’t necessarily explained but don’t prevent us from enjoying the film.

The script is original and in tune with the times, but still has a few weaknesses. There are also a number of facile plot devices, and the twists don’t have the same effect as they did at the start (betrayal, last-second defusing… you get used to them).

A little disappointing at the end, as the story doesn’t really move forward that much. The characters get a little more insight into the situation and the stakes of their mission, but that’s where it ends. What’s more, we’ll have to wait a year to find out what happens next.

In short, this is a very good film, and even though it’s very long (around 2 hours 40 minutes for a Mission Impossible), you never see the time go by.

To Watch or Not to Watch

This film follows in the footsteps of the other Mission Impossible films, with the same twists and plot devices. However, it goes even further in terms of stunts and action scenes, and for that I recommend you see it, if you don’t mind waiting a year to see the sequel.
