Misplaced Praise

As I was watching a tennis match this morning the thought of misplaced praise crossed my mind. Rafa Nadal hit an incredible drop volley winner against Medvedev and the audience gave Nadal a standing ovation.

This type of reaction isn’t limited to tennis it also occurs in basketball and many other sports both amateur and professional. Steph Curry hits a 3 pointer from deep, a hockey goalie scores a goal, or a soccer goalie makes an amazing save. I don’t right this article to deny the joy that people find such events, especially since I also enjoy them.

However, I find it ironic, that we don’t give equivalent recognition for the doctor who saves a life or performs a successful complicated surgery. We also don’t give recognition if the mother rescues her child from an oncoming vehicle — even if a number of bystanders see the event happening. We could certainly give applause for such events, but we don’t. Why not? These events other similar events have much more import than a 3-point or a great volley winner.

My first inclination was to say that this is misplaced values but then I thought, why shouldn’t we experience joy if Steph Curry hits a 3 pointer to win the game. So, my issue is not the joy that we experience when Nadal makes an incredible volley but that lack of appreciation for events that matter in life — saving a patient’s life or saving a child from an incoming vehicle.

So, the next time that you see an event that worthy, take time to give at least a small appraise, show the doctor appreciation. Just do something we need to reward those who really need rewarding.
