IAM CloudFormation Error Message — Role Name Is Invalid

I was deploying some new roles and policies using my common code when I got this message:
Resource handler returned message: “The specified value for roleName is invalid. It must contain only alphanumeric characters and/or the following: +=,.@_- (Service: Iam,
Initially I thought the role name did not exist. However upon further inspection, I had a space in front of my role name as well.
The role was in between quotes so the space counted as part of the role name.
