Minneapolis Public Schools Hacked By Group Known As Medusa

As reported by Fox News, Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) was hacked by a group called Medusa. The events were reported on March 7,2023.

The group did post a video online taking credit for the attack. This coincides to the week we had snow days, but the MPS district suffered not just a complete collapse of the system, but everybody was unable to access their accounts and devices for a number of days. The result? The data has been stolen and the group has demanded $1 million in return.

It is without a doubt a ransomware event and not an encryption event. MPS district shared the following message:

The President of the Teacher Union, Greta Callahan, in a Star Tribune article asserted that district officials should have been more transparent in light of the magnitude of the cyber attack instead of hoping things would return to normal, which is far from what is happening.

In another video, Sabocat shared some additional insights into the event. Not only was this more than just “technical difficulties” but sensitive data was also stolen as a result of this attack.

What information was obtained by the group?

The data that was taken is very worrying. It includes the following:

  • Social security numbers
  • Passwords
  • Bank account coordinates
  • Data stolen on all staff including students
  • Financial information
  • Emails

This is just some of the things that we know, yet this is still a developing story. What do you think will happen next?
