MindSet Matters: How to Ask Bad Questions?
The silent killers of a winning mindset…

Did you know you can have access to the best mentors in the world and the most up to date winning strategies, and still fail?
How?
By having a “messed up mindset.”
And even worse is having a “messed up mindset” that hides behind questions or statements that sound like they make sense.
Yes, there are bad questions that masquerade as good questions.
And even worse once more, are questions that are really statements which your brain hears as statements of fact.
3 “messed up mindset” statements cleverly masquerading as questions
Here are the big 3 “messed up mindset” statements cleverly masquerading as questions:
“I don’t get it”
Early in my coaching career I would get fooled into thinking this was a genuine request to understand something. And sometimes it is…
Many times though it’s just an excuse.
I’ve learned to respond to “I don’t get it” with:
“So? You don’t have to get it. Just know what the steps are to the outcome you want and follow them no matter what!”
Listen, my entire life I’ve had music playing in the background. I remember when I was little riding with my Dad somewhere and listening to the radio. The songs changed on the radio and I said:
“Dad, how do they get the bands to change so fast between songs in a really small studio?”
I remember a great big grin on his face.
In my lifetime we’ve gone from radio/stereo systems the size of furniture to having thousands of songs on a device in your pocket. I have NO idea how that works.
But I listen to it all day long…
What to do instead: Realize you don’t have to get it. Make sure you know the steps to take to bring the outcome you want. Then follow them with passion and heart, and don’t ever quit.
“This doesn’t make sense”
A close cousin of “I don’t get it” this one is used as an excuse for giving up.
How do I know it’s disguising an excuse to give up? Because when I act on that in my coaching I often hear:
“How did you know I was close to giving up?”
What to do instead: Replace “this doesn’t make sense” with “isn’t it great I don’t have to understand this to make it work for me?”
Much, much better question.
“I must be doing something wrong”
This one is perhaps the most deadly of the 3 we are looking at today. Our brain believes what we tell it. Period.
How many times do you imagine you’d have to say “I must be doing something wrong!” before things get better?
Exactly.
What to do instead: Here’s a much, much better question:
“In how many ways can I improve what I’m doing, make a difference and a profit, and enjoy the process?”
So what now?
Your challenge: There are 3 “What to do insteads” above. Your challenge is to say these 3 times a day for the next week and see what changes. I think you’ll like the results.
