Mindfulness Exercise to Help You Connect with Nature

Experience life as if for the first time

How often do we wander through the natural, wild environment and barely notice anything noteworthy? Beauty with the power to ignite spiritual awe surrounds us, yet we’re busy, deep in thought, and walk straight past a gorgeous flower, wondrous creature, or fantastic ancient tree.

In those moments when our awareness switches on, though, we experience amazement, calm, and joy amid the natural world. Such occurrences that feed our need for spiritual nourishment don’t happen by chance. They arise when we let go of self-talk about the past and future and are mindful of the present.

You need not wait for mindfulness to grab you by the hand and lead you into greater divine consciousness, though. All that’s required is presence of mind and the will to become one with nature for a while.

How to ignite mindfulness among nature

Select an organic object. It could be anything from a leaf to an entire tree and look at it with awareness, as if for the first time. Before you accumulated ideas about what objects meant, you saw them through pure eyes. You witnessed their wonder as a child when they first saw an animal, forest, or the ocean.

Imagine you have not seen your chosen object (or living organism) before and let it consume your focus. Pay attention to your other senses too.

Touch the tree’s bark or place your hands in the stream if it is your chosen point of concentration. What does it feel like?

Does it make a sound? If so, how does it affect you? Is it scented? Can you breathe its fragrance into your lungs? Does its beauty stimulate an emotion? And where do you feel that emotion in your body? What shape does it take?

Practice daily, and you’ll become more mindful on autopilot. You need not travel to woodland or the ocean, although that is wonderful if possible. Your garden, the local park, or even a plant from your windowsill may inspire you.

Regular practice can make you more observant and bring back the joy and wonder you experienced amid nature as a child.
