Dear Writers: MINARI and the Break into Act II

You don’t need to spell it out everywhere, but if you haven’t already, it’s your last chance to tell us the truth. The Break into Act II needs to clearly frame what the premise of your story actually is.
That premise, after all, is what the audience is buying into for the next 60% or so of the story.
MINARI GROWS ANYWHERE…LIKE WEEDS
In Minari, that moment is when Grandma takes the kids down the hill and says she secretly brought Minari, a plant from their homeland that will flourish easily. That one act will consume the family with an abundance of meaning and connection.
Minari’s Break into Act II acts as the setup that ties everything together into the Promise of the Premise. Each scene, the audience suddenly realizes, has taught us who these characters are, the obstacles they face, the dreams they have, the fates they fear.
