Midjourney Weekly Update (27th December 2023): Upcoming Releases and Midjourney V6 Alpha
A busy January, new website organization features, Midjourney V6 updates, and Outlook 2024

Hello everyone, how are your vacations going?
I was gone for a week, unplugged from work and writing. Simply unwinding. In fact, more of that is required…
But our hardworking Midjourney Developers are still at work!
Here’s a quick rundown of the most recent Midjourney Weekly Office Hours:
(1) Upcoming releases
- A faster (twice as fast) version of upscaler will be released soon.
- January will be an overwhelming month with updates every week. The emphasis will be on the release of smaller features.
- By the end of January, Midjourney V6 could be the default.
- By February or March, the website could have all its features operational.
- There may be a video feature by February or March, and new users can subscribe to Midjourney through the website.
- Niji V6 will likely be released in January.
- The developers plan to release a new model every 3–4 months.
(2) Midjourney Website
- There will be folder and filter features to help with organization.
- The social feature will be available in early January.
(3) Midjourney V6 Alpha

- The next update will likely be next week. The main visible difference will be improved text generation. The hands, prompt accuracy (“prompt following”), and coherence will also be improved.
- The developers noted the idiosyncrasies in the V6 Alpha. Fans of Midjourney should be patient while the update resolves those issues. V6 will remain in the Alpha stage following the update.
- Other issues mentioned include distorted faces, over-sharpening, and blurry images. These issues may be resolved in the future but may not be resolved entirely.
- The V6 Alpha launch was stressful because the developers were on vacation while David was still coordinating the launching event.
- “Don’t get upset (and complain on the internet); we’ll find and get you.” “Be thankful for the magic,” David says to the Midjourney fans, chuckling.
- David advised not to rely on V6 and V5 for serious projects right now because there will be a “blackout period” during which old versions of Midjourney will be temporarily unavailable while V6 is upgraded.
- Theoretically, V6 has all of V5’s knowledge and more. However, something is mysteriously not working in V6.
- V6 will be optimized for faster and cheaper (likely by 50%). The emphasis is on efficiency and quality. The developers try to complete the simple tasks before moving on to the more difficult ones.
- The inpainting Vary (Region) will be released first because it is the most requested feature.
- Midjourney can easily create a ControlNet-like feature, but it must first be trained and evaluated.
- The Style Tuner will be improved, but details are unknown; the Style Consistency and Video features will be available in January.
- How does the Style Consistency feature in V6 work? Use image prompting to input an image of a character; the bot will create similar images.
- The V6 is more capable of making anime than the V5.
- There will be some changes in moderation as problems arise.
- The V6 will become more powerful, serious, and capable of many tasks.
- The dragon, spaceships, and dolphins work very well in V6.
(4) Outlook
- Midjourney V6.1 and V7 V6.1 will have improved prompt comprehension.
- David was still determining if V6.2 will be released. Most likely, it will go straight to V7.
- Similarly, V7 will be even more adept at adhering to the prompt.
- The new
/describedis unavailable because it did not pass the internal evaluation. - A larger batch/grid of images did not appear, and it is unknown when this feature will be available.
- Regarding moderation, the developers want to make it difficult for users to do bad things. Create a negative image of a public figure, for example.
- The focus will be on the 2X upscaler because more people use it than the 4X upscaler.
- In contrast to Adobe Premier, David wants to make Midjourney usable by the average person.
(5) Other updates unrelated to Office Hours
(5.1) Upscale (Creative) may result in incoherent output
- Understand that Midjourney V6 Alpha is still in the alpha phase and that things will change and improve quickly. However, be aware that Upscale (Creative) may introduce incoherence into your image. In this case, an extra ear was added to the cat after upscaling the Featured Image.
- Therefore, double-check your image thoroughly if you use Upscale (Creative)!
