MidJourney Office Hours Recap — March 20, 2024
🤖 Model Personalization
What It’s For:
- Enhances user experience by tailoring image outputs to individual preferences.
- Fills in details not specified in prompts based on learned user likes and dislikes.
- Increases the diversity of MidJourney images to align with users’ aesthetic tastes.
- Addresses the default aesthetic and bias of the default MidJourney model by incorporating personal preferences.
How It Works:
- Analyzes user interactions on the website, especially liked and ranked images.
- Adapts to user preferences for aspects like art style, image composition, color contrast, etc.
- Does not restrict users to a single style; it will still follow explicit prompts while personalizing the unstated elements.
- Each account will have a unique model personalization profile, which is shareable with other MidJourney users.
What You Need to Do to Personalize Your Own MidJourney Model:
There are two ways for MidJourney to collect sufficient data for your own model personalization:
- Liking other users’ images: Users can go to the MidJourney website’s explore page to ‘like’ images that they like.
- Ranking images: David Holz suggested users spend at least 10–15 minutes on https://alpha.midjourney.com/rank to rank images.
- Only ratings of other users’ images will count towards personalization, not self-likes.
- Backward compatibility will be ensured for users who have already liked and ranked images in the past.
- The Niji version will not include model customization because it’s tuned for a Japanese aesthetic.
Current Status:
- The feedback from internal tests indicates high satisfaction with the personalization feature and will continue to improve.
Timeline:
- Model personalization will not be activated by default in the current V6 version, but it will be in the upcoming V7.
🕰️ The feature is expected to be released within the next 1–2 weeks.
Mar 15 Update: While exploring the “Character Reference” feature, I discovered a simple hack that allows for character consistency across multiple characters, not just one — and I can’t wait to share it with you! Be sure to check it out:
💻 MidJourney Website Enhancements:
- New features include a news section with various types of content, including MidJourney Office Hours summaries.
- Notification options for news will be customizable.
- Additional functionalities include bug reporting and feedback submission in a leaderboard-style format.
- Social features like group image creation are planned.
- The website will eventually be accessible to non-Discord users.
🕰️ The new features on the website are expected to be released within the next few weeks.
🆙 MidJourney V6 Alpha Update
- MidJourney V6 is transitioning from Alpha to Beta.
- V6 is expected to become 30% cheaper and faster, with a significant speed increase anticipated.
🕰️ Both of these updates will be released in 1–2 weeks.
🎨 “Style Reference” Feature Upgrade
- The “Style Reference” feature has been upgraded to “Style Reference V2” for enhanced precision in style interpretation.
- It aims to focus on style elements while avoiding the replication of non-style attributes.
- The “Style Weight” parameter (
--sw) with an adjustable range of 0–1000 now works better than the previous one. - However, feedback indicates that some users prefer the previous version over the updated one.
- Plans to implement versioning for “Style Reference” to allow access to multiple versions.
- Members will have the option to use different versions of “Style Reference” according to their preference.

🔥 Other Upcoming MidJourney Features and Updates
Video and 3D Development
- Video capabilities are in progress; David mentioned, “It works better than most available videos out there, but I’m not happy yet.”
- Hardware issues with capturing 3D data have been resolved.
- David said there’s at least a 50% chance they might have 3D releasing before video — and video will come after the MidJourney V7 release.
- For both 3D and video, the focus is on image-to-3D or image-to-video conversion, not text-to-3D/video.
MidJourney V7
- V7 development is going “going slowly but surely”; it is expected to be a significant update from V6, a way bigger jump than from V5 to V6.
Style Random
- The Style Random feature for randomly selected art styles may be possible to release next week.
🚀 Long-Term Vision of MidJourney: Real-World Stimulation
MidJourney reiterates the goal of achieving real-time world simulation.
- Quoting what David Holz said in the Office Hours,
“Our goal is to move to open real-time world stimulation. The idea is that if we have 3D and video MidJourney and then real-time MidJourney, that would run really fast. If we put all those things together, we have a world simulation.
The goal is to build each of those three things separately, and then bring them all together…
We’re going to make more of a sandbox... People can make video games in it and people can shoot movies in it, but the goal is to build an open-world sandbox. It’s not a game, you can play in the sandbox, but the sandbox isn’t a game.”
