Let’s Keep It Short!

This challenge has ended.

Greetings PW writers! We have a new monthly challenge for you here at PW. In honor of a publication that closed its doors too soon (Centina/Pentina), let’s write some microfiction!

THE CHALLENGE

Write a Centina (aka a drabble, aka 100-word story) or a Pentina (aka a dribble, aka 50-word story) using the following:

If only Fortune…

You can also use one of Christine GravesA Word A Day prompts or Joanne Olivieri’s photo challenges.

(Please give credit to whoever's prompt you use with a mention and a link back to the prompt’s page)

THE RULES

  1. You must be a PW writer and you must submit your piece to PW. If you are not a PW writer, you may ask to be added by going to the Submissions page and commenting there. Do not comment to be added here!
  2. Up to three (3) entries per writer. Only one (1) entry will be chosen as a winner, not all three (3).
  3. The story must be either a Centina or a Pentina — we will be checking the word count!
  4. You must have a clearly stated Title and Subtitle. Entries without a Subtitle will not qualify for the competition. Use ‘Response for the Microfiction Writing Challenge’ as your subtitle. Do not expect an editor to remind you or add a subtitle for you. Use an appropriate image for your story and cite it properly. Editors will not remind you of this.
  5. You must use the following three tags — Fiction, Centina or Pentina, and Writing Challenge. The other two tags are whatever you wish them to be. Entries without those three tags will still get published in PW, but they will not qualify for the challenge. Do not expect an editor to add these tags for you.
  6. All entries are due by March 31st at 6:00 pm US CST. Use this converter to make sure your story is in on time.
  7. Winner will be announced on April 4th.

THE JUDGES

Ravyne Hawke, Joanne Olivieri, & Charlie Cole

What will we be looking for? Your story must have a beginning, middle and end. It must read like a story! You must follow the rules — all of them to qualify. Please check your work for errors before submitting your story — spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you need assistance, Rose Malana is our line editor. She can be contacted to assist you by emailing me — [email protected]

THE PRIZE

A year membership subscription to Medium ($50 USD value).

Your winning story will also go out on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

So what say you, PW Writers? Are you up to the challenge? Show us all your fiction writing skills. Make us envious of your talents. Give us all you’ve got.

Good luck! Ravyne Hawke, EIC
