Call Me Crazy — But I’m Offended That You’re Offended
Beware — this article is super offensive
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…oh what fun it used to be when we could say what we wanted to say!
Maybe it’s because I’ve been cooped up all year and feel a bit loopy…
Or maybe it’s because I’ll be leaving my 50’s behind in 2021, but I find myself feeling offended by everything that’s considered offensive these days.
It’s getting ridiculous…
Yes, things offend us; everyone has been offended by something or someone at some point, but so what? It’s all subjective.
Shake it off, and solve your own problem. Why do the masses need to comply because someone is offended?
Earlier this week, I was online looking at homes for sale and noticed that “master bedrooms” are now referred to as “primary bedrooms.”
It got me thinking.
The word “master” can be used as a noun, a verb or an adjective, and each version has a different meaning. In the case of our “master bedrooms,” it’s being used as an adjective meaning main or principal.
How is this offensive? We’re not using it in the historical noun context, meaning a man who has slaves working for him. It’s the main friggin bedroom in our house.
What’s happened to our common sense?
We can’t even say Merry Christmas to each other without worrying that we may have offended someone around us.
Every time I see this stuff, I think…come on, get a grip!
When did people become so sensitive?
Last year they were up in arms about the song “Baby, it’s Cold Outside.” The rebel in me wanted to crank that tune every chance I got and sing happily along with the lyrics.
Call me crazy, but I’m offended that people are offended.
What I want to know is who are these “overly offended” people anyway?
I’ve never met one in my life; have you? How are they imposing new rules, and why are their needs more important than those of the non-offended? How do they even have enough time on their hands to think this stuff up? I’m not saying that I’ve never been offended, but that’s my issue, isn’t it?
Personally, I find spitting on the sidewalk disgusting and offensive, but that doesn’t mean I’ll make a federal case about it and insist that our county put up “no spitting” signs by the sidewalks.
It means I’ll look away (maybe make a face) and avoid stepping in it — simple right? I solved my own issue without imposing my will on those that spit, or don’t mind spitting or maybe have COVID and need to spit!
We live in an enormous world populated by all kinds of people with different ideas of what’s offensive and what’s not. And yes, we should respect each other's differences, but basic common sense must come into play.
So if you’re offended by the lyrics of a Christmas song — don’t listen to it. If you’re offended by the coarse language in a movie — don’t watch it!
If you don’t believe in Christ and the word Christmas offends you, don’t say it. That doesn’t mean the rest of the world must comply with your wishes.
So, have a Merry Christmas and pass this on to someone who’s got their tinsel in a tangle!
Well, it felt good to get that off my chest.
I hope you’re not offended by my opinion, but if you are, you should have just stopped reading my article :)
This hilarious two-minute video clip by comedian Steve Hughes sums it up perfectly.
If you enjoyed that little vent, you’d like this one too…
