Mercury Retrograde for Non-believers

I’m sure many people have heard the jokes about Mercury’s retrograde. It is becoming so mainstream that I recently saw a TV commercial that teased about it. However, I understand that a large percentage of the population feels that astrology is nonsense. I get it. It takes a huge amount of faith to believe in astrology, magic, psychics, etc. Then what doesn’t help is that there are frauds and scammers everywhere.
As a practicing witch who is serious about the path, I am becoming more and more distressed about the stories I’m hearing on TikTok about witches. It seems as if everyone can make a video about a spell or a ritual and present themselves as an expert. I’m personally not comfortable with organized religion, but I will give credit where credit is due. At least the five main world religions attempt to train and educate their clergy and followers on their philosophies using ancient texts, scholarly works, and curricula.
This leads me back full circle to astrology. This is not a branch of knowledge for the undisciplined. One must study birth charts, planetary positions, zodiac signs, event charts, etc. I’m sure some people write about astrology based on some information found on Google. But the field is much more involved than that. I don’t ever represent myself as an educated astrologist. I read astrological forecasts specifically for synchronicity.
I consider myself a lunar witch. I focus on the moon’s phases and work with that energy. This story would be too long if I tried to defend my argument about the moon’s pull and how it affects us as individuals. I’m not here to convince anyone to follow my spiritual path. However, all of us can find collective lessons from the natural world. Maybe there is something to gather about the warnings of Mercury retrograde.
The irony about a retrograde is that it is actually an optical illusion. The planet isn’t really moving backward. Whatever the case, astrologers believe that our perceived view on Mercury retrograde affects our lives in certain areas, mainly in technology, travel, and communication.
I have had instances during Mercury retrograde when a package I mailed got lost, and I once had a critical text message not received. My GPS wonked out when I drove to pick up my son at the airport. Was this because of Mercury retrograde? Probably not to most. But for me, it always leads back to synchronicity.
I’ve known people who are not religious but still have their children baptized. I guarantee that many claim they don’t believe in superstitions yet would still not walk under a ladder or open an umbrella inside. You know why… just in case.
This is why I hope you, Lovely Reader, are open to the lessons of Mercury Retrograde. You don’t have to be a believer, but I will tell you why these guidelines are good for our souls.
One of the most significant positions of Mercury Retrograde is to slow down. This is something we all need to be reminded of. How often do we stop to take a breath in our fast-paced society? Sometimes, on Friday evenings, I make a to-do list of what I want to try to accomplish over the weekend. Then, as I glance at this overwhelming list of errands and projects, I depress the hell out of myself. I schedule no time to relax. Remembering to stop biting off more than we can chew is beneficial advice.
Mercury Retrograde cautions against starting any new projects. I like this advice because I am inherently an impulsive gal. It’s part of my personality. I appreciate the warning to wait. Whenever I waited before making an important decision, I sighed with relief. It wouldn’t have been optimal if I had forged ahead so recklessly. Shouldn’t we all wait some time before signing a contract or making a financial decision?
The ”re” in retrograde is always compared to “re” words. Review. Revise. Rethink. Reconsider. Reprioritize.
I love the power of those words. We can all use Mercury’s retrograde as an excuse to be more conscious of our choices. “Let me think this through.” “I need to stop myself from jumping to conclusions.” Where did I take on too much, so I need to slow down?”
One of the best pieces of guidance is, “What is truly worth my energy?”
You, Wise Reader, do not have to believe in astrology to take this time to remember your priorities. If I didn’t adequately communicate this imperative point of view, then…well…I blame Mercury retrograde.
