Mental Health: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Why is there a strong emphasis on taking care of yourself and reaching optimal mental health?

It is normal to feel sad, angry, and distraught in life. Just like it is normal to feel happy, excited, and joyful. These are common emotions to experience. Our emotions make up who we are. It is very uncommon to see individuals without emotions.

We are all busy people. Many of us are occupied with completing our daily tasks that we forget what it is like to be in a mentally healthy state. People with a healthy mindset can make strides in life without falling victim to our scary, dramatic, and horrifying thoughts. In particular, a person with a healthy attitude will ignore the horrific beliefs of how disgraceful and unappealing they are. Instead, they will live life on their terms and be happy with who they are.

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” — Roy T. Bennett

What my life is like

My life is chaotic, living with a sister with autism, my mom, who has thyroid and high blood pressure, and my dad, who has been unemployed for three years. Sure, I could use these situations in life as an excuse to be depressed, but I don’t want those situations to define who I am.

I’m a pharmacy major in my third year currently, and my goal is to become a pharmacist and save the lives of many patients soon. That is my primary goal in life. I will always suppress negative thoughts because they will do me no good in life. They are a distraction to my primary goals.

My first day of college

Back in my freshman year of college, I was scared for the first day of classes because I knew no one. I went to high school in New Jersey, and I knew no one from Pennsylvania and at the University of the Sciences. Sure, I could have been very nervous meeting new people. I mean, you never know if they will like or hate me. But to be honest, why should I care?

As long I enjoy the life I am living, why do I care what other people think about me? People should admire me for who I am. No matter how much people will hate or discourage me, I am who I am. No one can ever change that prospect.

Never compare yourself with other people to achieve optimal mental health

I also strongly emphasize you avoid comparing yourself with anyone. Remember that everyone has different priorities and upbringings in life. Ensure never to define and compare yourself with the achievements and accomplishments of someone. You are a champion in your regards; never forget that.

My best friend Ali Rizvi is currently a business major at Penn State University in his third year of college. He and I are both hard-working and motivated individuals. We both spend hours studying for exams and doing our best to score the highest grades in all of our classes. With that said, I will never compare myself or be jealous of him in any way. Instead, I will admire him for who he is and learn from him.

“It may be important to great thinkers to examine the world, to explain and despise it. But I think it is only important to love the world, not to despise it, not for us to hate each other, but to be able to regard the world and ourselves and all beings with love, admiration and respect.” — Hermann Hesse

The life of an individual with a healthy mindset

A healthy and well-functioning mind will recognize the cruelty of constantly finding fault with its nature. It will serve as a barrier from the millions of fears that surround us. I might be scared that one day a blood vessel may pop, or I could meet into a car accident, or one day I could suffer a heart attack; I could go on and on.

Our fears are endless! If I let those fears in, I am overwhelming myself with pain and anxiety. A healthy mind will avoid thinking about these fears and take life one day at a time.

Avoid disastrous imagination to take control of your mental health

A healthy mind will avoid disastrous imagination. It will recognize a limit between what is real and what would be considered an imagination. Imagine if I was worried about a tidal wave that could end our world today. This is a catastrophic prospect to think about.

I don’t know if a tidal wave like that even exists, let alone end our world! No one knows! Why would I overwhelm myself with fear that may or may not be real?

A healthy mind is like a drawer

I like to think of a healthy mind like a drawer. Not all compartments of the drawer will open. My mind will open only selective portions of the drawer, and the rest of the compartments will stay closed. Inside the drawer, there are healthy thoughts, catastrophic thoughts, joyful thoughts, and sad thoughts.

Inside a healthy mind, you will notice that the disastrous and tragic thoughts are locked securely. That is because there is no need for those thoughts.

The healthy and joyful thoughts compartment, however, will always be open. Those are the thoughts that motivate and inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.

That is why when you talk to an individual with a healthy mindset, you will notice that they have no erotic, harmful, or catastrophic thoughts. They have good intentions and are always willing to contribute in a meaningful manner.

Never forget about happy thoughts

In my life, I always define myself with happy thoughts. That is the side people want to know more and hear about. I’ve said it a million times, and it never gets old. Earlier in the article, I mentioned that my sister suffers from autism. The picture above this paragraph is my sister, Akshitha Rajagopalan. Whenever I am sad, I think about her beautiful smile. Through the pain and suffering, she smiles and inspires people. I will always respect and admire her for that!

Our thoughts are like a tornado. If you listen to every single one of your thoughts, it will destroy your mental health. Always avoid overthinking and talk to your loved ones about anything that is bothering you. Suppressing your thoughts, emotions, and feelings is a one-way ticket to depression.

Whenever something has made me sad or bothered me in my life, I always make sure that I talk to my parents and friends about it. Not only will they listen to me, but they will also comfort me and provide suggestions on how I can conquer the problems in my life. Understand that everyone has thousands of negative thoughts inside themselves; it is a matter of whether you let them in or not.
