Nature
Memoir of my wandering in search of mushrooms
A Walk In The Woods
When I think about woods I immediately imagine mushrooms.
I haven’t been in a wood for a long time now, but Dr. Preeti Singh prompt evoked in me a fervid memoir of previous years as I used to go for long walks in the woods in search of mushrooms when I was young.
Together with my family, I used to spend summer holidays in the mountains up to the age of eighteen and those epic memories pop up from time to time in my aging brain, making me feel happy.
To tell you the truth, the happy part of the story is recent, as I recognize what beautiful experiences I went through during those years. While living them, though, especially during the 14–18 age, I wasn’t so happy and fully conscious of the preciousness of the time I was spending in the woods.
I appreciated being in nature and I liked going after the mythical, well-protected pore mushrooms (boletus) in a secret area only my expert parents and local friends would remember. But as an adolescent, I would have rather followed my plans of being with my few friends chatting, playing, or reading a book.
I have to thank my parents and other family members for introducing me to those contexts and teaching me the value of simplicity and the pleasant energetic feeling of being surrounded by nature.
The warm appealing light of the sun passing through the branches of trees in the woods still reappears in my memory when the same light reaches my computer on some rich, golden, and sunny days.
The excitement of finding a hidden mushroom knowing it was edible.
The fulfilling fatigue of reaching a distant point after hours of walking.
The exaltation of my grandma checking the number of different mushrooms which she liked to prepare in big glasses cooked with vinegar to have them available in wintertime.
A walk in the woods means a lot to me. Even more nowadays that I rarely go to the mountains with that purpose in mind. Maybe I don’t want to cover those memories by having other walks in the woods. I enjoy being in nature in other forms and contexts. I spend a lot of time in nature. But I seem to want to leave those walks in the woods as they are in my memory.
