The Journey of Ralph Towner and the Running Guitar

Those years, we used to set up stalls by the roadside, painting and playing the guitar together. You said you were deeply fascinated by Ralph Towner, one of the few contemporary jazz musicians who dedicated himself entirely to the acoustic guitar. As a founding member of the early Oregon jazz band and a master of playing the classical twelve-string guitar, he became one of my favorites as well, especially his early works with the quartet.

The title track of Ralph Towner's new album, "At First Light," sounds like a very personal reflection on dawn or early morning. This is a recurring theme in his solo works. Towner started studying classical guitar in his early twenties after transitioning from piano and composition, and in his later years, his playing style became more reminiscent of the lute, almost like a return to the origins. Therefore, pieces like "Nardis" may no longer be performed, but "Anthem" will be preserved.

I reminisce about you, the young you, and the guitar that accompanied our running through my paintings.
