Melodie Muses On Nyota’s Incredible Journey
And worries about that weasel!

As Long As We Remember by Kae is a space adventure, suitable for all ages. It is set in the world of the video adventure game, Starbound.
It’s going to be one swift karate chop, weasel stew, and a pair of gloves
I loved that Nyota, the main character in this book, took in a lost weasel and gave it a home. The thing is that Nyota really isn’t a pet person. She’s had a pretty harsh life, and has only just begun to get things properly on the rails. She has never had the time or opportunity to get to know the wonderful world of pets of any kind. Her encounters with creatures rather tend towards the explosive and life-threatening.

Life dealt Nyota one blow too many. She was all alone and didn’t know where to turn.
Then Weasel arrived.
I confess I was worried. I could see right off that Weasel had no ill-intent and just wanted some company, but how would Nyota greet him? It’s going to be one swift karate chop, weasel stew, and a pair of gloves, I thought to myself.
But no!
Subconsciously, Nyota recognised that she needed him. So that left the spacecraft for me to worry about.
Nyota really isn’t a pet person
Here’s what I said to Kae:
The weasel adopted Nyota at just the point Nyota needed company (simple devotion without judgement), but Nyota is practical and not really a ‘pet person’. How worried was she about introducing into an already damaged spaceship a curious beast apt to chew things?
Here’s Kae’s answer:
Nyota was honestly so addled by the trauma of what she had been through and so focused on repairing the ship at first that she didn’t have the brain-space to worry about Weasel damaging things.
She is very inexperienced in weasel behavior overall, has just seen them as shoulder and pocket buddies to various scientists over the years. I’m not sure danger to the ship would have occurred to her until she saw it bite something.
Thankfully, this weasel was already used to the ship and had learned what not to chew! Once SAIL was repaired properly, it was able to guide Nyota through weaselproofing. I’m sure Hadley was suitably appalled when she heard the story later (she’s way more familiar with animals than Nyota is).
Hadley’s a great character — and an unexpected one in several ways. It hadn’t previously occurred to me, but yes of course, Hadley would soon have put Nyota right on any weasel business.
