It Helps To Find An Ally

Oh, the sheer terror of meeting your partner’s extended family for the first time! It can be absolutely nerve wracking.

My uncle Roland made it easier for Karen, when she first met my family.

“Hi sweetie, how are you?,” he had said to her, and he leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek and a big hug.

She felt welcomed. And it made the rest of the evening much more painless.

My family gatherings are always big and chaotic, and can also be intimidating to a newcomer, so uncle Roland’s greeting was something Karen really appreciated as she met everyone for the first time.

“He called me ‘sweetie’,” Karen said to me that night.

It meant a lot to her, and she always remembered that first meeting with him.

I didn’t have the heart to tell her that he called everyone ‘sweetie’.
