WHAT genre(s) do you focus on?

I focus on nonfiction writing. The areas that I have explored are personal narratives, essays, creative nonfiction, and memoirs. I am very interested in learning journalistic writing.

WHEN did you start writing?

A little over 10 years ago, I wanted to share who I was and communicate my ideas through writing in an impactful way. Yet it was evident what my shortcomings were and how I had lots of room for improvement. Quora was the platform that gave me my first outlet to begin to practice writing with some consistency. I was introduced to Medium during the pandemic and subscribed to be a reader in 2021. I took the plunge to write in Medium in June 2022.

WHERE are you located in the real world?

Monterrey, Nuevo León, México🇲🇽

Note from Toni: This is how I imagine Natalie… chillin’ & reading in Mexico.

HOW do you create? Explain your creation process.

Some creations are inspired by an engaging conversation, an observation that left me reflecting deeply, or occurrences in my life. I use the notes app on my phone to jot down ideas that come to mind anywhere I go. I’ve begun to leave myself audio clips that I create in the middle of my day or before I go to sleep. I typically create in the mornings on my desktop. It’s a deliberate plan and when there are struggles — I walk away. I do not force what doesn’t flow. I complete a writing piece over hours, days, over even weeks — it depends on the topic. I can overthink my creations, and I’m happy to see that my journey continues to evolve as I give myself permission to write more freely.

WHY did you choose to write on Medium.com? Further, why do you continue to write on this platform?

Medium intrigued me the further I spent time reading on its platform. There was such a variety — I read journalistic articles that lay right next to deeply personal essays. My interest was piqued as more articles appeared on my feed about writers’ journeys on Medium. I decided to write on Medium to learn to write. I sensed it could be an easy platform with abundant resources through fellow writers that could teach me all that I wanted to learn. My journey is long, and the community provides encouragement and support that makes me feel safe and welcome. I continue to remain on Medium as it has been a rewarding and accountability tool to help me grow as a writer and person.

I was touched to have received the acronym below (which was sent after this draft was created) in the comment section of this fun pub! And this is a solid reminder — of why I write and continue to still write in Medium: a generous, kind, and supportive community. Thank you all.
