Medium’s New Logo: A Review

It’s new, so it’s the worst! Let’s all get mad at it!

Gif (pronounced with a hard G) from Medium’s introductory blog post.

Hello. It’s me, the guy who reviewed Medium’s new logo back in 2017, right when the platform switched from recommendations to claps.

Side note: Remember how MAD everyone was when claps were introduced? Good heavens, people. Please try to remember that you are human, and you are wired to hate new things.

Now then. Medium has a logo. It’s new and I hate it.

Important disclaimer: I am still a copywriter who knows nothing about design.

Pros of the new Medium logo

  1. Once again, it is spelled correctly. Remarkable attention to detail.
  2. The font (I’m intentionally not calling it a typeface, which makes designers very mad) is squishier and more compact than before, which means the logo takes up less space. Such a humble change.
  3. The black and white logo reminds me of the time I took my wife to see The Artist, a black and white film, at the movie theater. She knew nothing about the movie and I made sure not to tell her anything. When she realized it was a silent film, the look on her face was so pure and so full of joy. This was nearly a decade ago, and I still think about it all the time. I love her a whole lot. She’s such a great mom and has made me a better person than I used to be simply by being her.
  4. Remember movie theaters?
  5. The logo has a symbol now! Cute!

Cons of the new Medium logo

  1. Is it just me, or are those circles different sizes? Someone should fix that.
  2. Medium’s new logo reminds me that Medium is still here for me, but I don’t publish on here as much as I used to, and that makes me feel like I’m slacking.
  3. I’m not slacking, of course. Working full time, doing the family thing, trying my best to be a good husband and father, playing video games when I should be sleeping.
  4. And look, credit to Medium for pushing the writers I enjoy closer to the top of my feed, but to this day, every time I check the site in the morning, some of the first stories I see are some version of “I Had An Orgy On My Wedding Day 1 Hour Before The Ceremony” and “Do These 2 Things If You Want To Be Happy.” That content does not inspire me to make some of my own.
  5. Also, the world is on fire, and I talk myself out of publishing humor and satire because really, who needs it? I made my bones on here by yelling at La Croix and people who double space and people who say “good vibes only.” I don’t get mad at the little things anymore, and even if I did, I wouldn’t be able to write about them. These days, I can only get mad at the big things. All the time.

I condemn Medium’s new logo for forcing this (probably healthy) introspection. 2 out of 5 stars.
