Medium’s New CEO — “It’s Not Medium’s Job To Give You Full-Time Income”
Use Medium as a vehicle to success, and not the destination.
This morning I tuned in to watch Zulie Rane’s live interview with new Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine.
I was interested in hearing about the new CEO’s vision for the platform.
He’s already gotten a headstart by fixing bugs on the platform as it relates to notifications on iPhones.
Throughout the interview, Tony re-iterated his commitment to maintaining a platform that makes it easy and simple for writers to publish
Here are some of the major talking points that came up during the interview linked below:
- Medium’s focus is to create a smooth writing experience for writers.
- 2 Pillars of Medium ( Doubling down on publishing tools & doubling down on the quality of subscription)
- Pushing for real focus on the platform.
- Medium will “Raise the subscription bar”
- How does raising the bar affect writers? You get paid more when you exceed the bar. But you’ll have to do more work. What more work here means is — completely dependent on you.
- You’ll have to push yourself to become a better writer.
- Fewer articles selected for distribution. But you get paid more.
- Medium is not going to encourage you to write an all topics. This will pressure writers to specialize.
- Use Medium as a place to practice, build a portfolio, and get creative. What works now, might not always work for you.
- Medium is not a place to make a living, but find the information to make a living.
- Use writing to open a path to expertise, which then opens doors to more opportunities like writing, speaking, consulting, teaching etc
- Think of Medium as a vehicle to success and not the destination.
- Will more countries be added to the MPP? He needs to look more into it. He doesn’t know yet.
- Custom domains could be made possible once again.
- No strong stance on whether the mobile editor can brought back.
- Bonuses are not aligned with everyone’s interests.
These are some major talking points that came up during the interview.
