Medium Winners, Come Forward!
Natalie Portman loves you

How do you think you’ll find out you won the Medium Writer’s Contest? A phone call? An email? A text? Will Natalie Portman call you?
Did you win the 50,000 dollars? Will you be honorably mentioned? It’s so exciting, all this waiting.
Have you allowed yourself the possibility that you could have won?
What would winning feel like? Will it inspire you or inflict you with permanent writer’s block?
Will you tell people right away? Or, will you walk around a while, keeping it to yourself like that shell-shocked Lotto winner?
Did you write about something private? That you don’t want other people to know about? Because you really didn’t think you’d win, did you. But now it’s all out there in the open. Maybe they’ll post it in The New York Times. It’s a pretty big deal.
What if you wrote about an affair? Even if you used your pen name, how will you explain that 50,000 dollars to your spouse? Whoops. You didn’t think it through, did you? I’m sorry. That really sucks.
What’s it going to feel like when Roxanne Gay says, “Wow, you can write?”
Are they going to make you do interviews? You’re an introvert! You can’t do interviews! Why do they think you write under a penname on Medium?
What about a book contract? Do you think Medium will insist you write a book? You’ve got that book you started in grad school. Should you finish that one? How could you, though? The world has changed so much since then. How you felt about the planet and relationships twenty years ago is unrelatable in the current state of the world.
Well, you won, though. That’s amazing. Good for you. Congratulations.
