  • Botticello acknowledges that while Medium's formatting guidelines are not absolute, they can be a decisive factor for curators.
  • The article implies that the use of the word "Medium" in a title can preclude an article from being curated, which is why the author did not follow the format for the subtitle in this particular article.

Many writers do not consider the formatting of their Medium article. The formatting of your article’s title can affect a reader’s perception of your article and can even play a major role in preventing your article from being curated.

Standard headline styling, preferred by Medium, is title case for the headline and sentence case for the subtitle. This isn’t a firm requirement, but as I’ve discussed before, it can be a deciding factor for editors looking for articles to curate.

Note: I don’t follow the format for subtitle in this article because by mentioning the word “Medium” in the title, I have already assured that this article won’t be curated.

If you are unsure of whether you are following the proper formatting for Medium titles, here is a handy tool I created that auto-formats titles by style:

Just enter the text of your title into my capitalization tool, and select either the “Article Title” button or the “Article Subtitle” button:

For example, “7 lessons from my first year writing on medium” would be written as seen below for the title and subtitle, respectively:

You can then click the “copy icon” on the right of the tool to copy your newly formatted title:
