Medium: The Most Dangerous Social Media Of All?

The end of my honeymoon phase

I’m a pretty chill person, give or take a topic.

My first few months on Medium have been absolutely wonderful. Story after story full of inspiration and reflection. What a wonderful place. A writer’s cooperative.

Perhaps it is not best to feel so blissful. If you are comfortable in your information sphere, it means the bubble is air-tight. I’m not one to shy away from new information and opposing views. Or am I?

One of the most detrimental components of social media, for me, was a constant onslaught of negativity. Was I attracting it? Did the algorithm believe I craved divisive arguments or blatant prejudice?

As I have been expanding my reading on the platform, the pink cloud slowly lifts away. Below it, a series of experts, pseudo experts, and ranting lunatics. There is no bar for entry.

While it is true that you can gain a large enough following on other social media sites to eventually monetize in one way or another…here you can do so immediately.

Imagine if X, or the Twitter days for that matter, had been paying any fool to type out his or her “brilliant” opinion about stuff right from the get-go.

Obviously I am no exception. If you find me claiming to be an expert on anything other than myself and my own damn life (or maybe Star Trek), you can call me out on it.

Be careful out there and beware that some people are here for one thing only….finally getting paid to spew their anger in your face.

I, on the other hand, am finally getting paid to journal my stupid feelings, talk about Star Trek, and share random ideas in hopes others will help me build on them.
