Medium Takes on The Tweet
We’re Still Finding Out More About “Shortform”

Medium is at it again. Now they are going after Twitter with “Shortform” posts. If you haven’t heard, a Shortform post is Medium’s equivalent of a tweet.
Medium’s founder, Ev Williams, created the platform to improve the quality of online content. Is he now trying to bring that quality to the rescue of those who’ve been through one too many tweet-storm?
Introducing Shortform.
You can spout off about a hot topic, highlight another post or get people engaged in your profile stream. These are just a few ideas.
So Far, Here’s What I’ve Learned About “Shortform” Posts:
- They contain around 125 words or less
- They start with a sentence in bold (instead of a headline)
Those seem to be the only real requirements. You’re free to add images, tag members, link to other stories, just as long as you keep it short! (see what I did there?)
The idea is that the whole post should appear on your profile without a “read more” link, so people can sail through your profile stream and easily get the point.
Remember, Shortform isn’t a new “feature” on Medium, it’s just a new idea about posting a short article. But it’s an idea the Medium staff appears to be promoting.
Doing some detective work, the origin of Shortform seems to be from an email to a users of Beta publishing tools encouraging, “Short-form creation.”
The email said, “Fewer rules and more flexibility to let you create and share short-form content — an image, a quote, or a video.”
In fact, the concept is so new that even the spelling of “Shortform” is evolving. You’ll notice above that Medium called it short-form (with a hyphen) but now that it’s “a thing,” it’s already achieved one-word status: Shortform.
A Big Question Remains:
How much money does a typical Shortform post earn compared to a regular post?
Not that we’re doing this for the money (haha, funny) but anytime a writer can make even spare change from expressing themselves, that’s pretty cool.
Normally, we expect read-time to be factored into the Partner Program’s payment algorithm, but will Shortform stories be given more priority and therefore more pay? Well, let’s find out!
What better way to discover the truth than with a live experiment?
So, I posted my first Shortform story, a test to see how it does compared to one of my regular posts. I will update that post with my findings…
Wild Speculation Included…
To make my first Shortform story more interesting, I make a wild speculation about the future of Medium. Here it is:
How Much Money Does a Shortform Post Make?
So, do you think Shortform could be helpful?
