Medium stories writing and helping each other
Medium stories writing and SEO is a rather strange landscape and an even stranger crowd. Because although everyone is competing, we are also helping one another rise, well, most of us. Unfortunately, there are those whose fame went straight to the head.
You will never be famous or important enough to give you reason not to be humble and kind. Your kind words as a professional might just be the only kind words that a beginner writer gets for the day. A tiny effort for you, a lifetime’s inspiration for the beginner writer. Remember that.
Medium offers an option to send a private note, with regards to a specific Medium story. It is not like a private message, and you are only allowed 200 characters, kind of like a Twitter tweet. This is NOT a sales page or opportunity to flood the private notes with links. Don’t do that!

As illustrated above, you can see the little comment icon with a padlock inside. That will pop up by highlighting any part of the text in the Medium story. When you click on that, another window will open where you can leave your private note.
This is where you leave a private note for advice especially. Medium publications often use these to leave a message about why your story was not accepted, and advice to fix it so it can be published. If you have advice to give, this is the place to do it.
For instance, a well-known author left me a private note after publishing to her Medium publication. She had shortened the title with an explanation. This resulted in much more views and reads, therefore, a lesson learnt. If you can offer advice to help beginner writers do so here.
But this is not a place to run beginners down, it’s a place to help them get on the right track. Never criticize, only offer help. Always avoid shaming someone publicly, no matter how rude they are. Readers will notice your kindness and actions.
Mention other authors and reading lists
When you are consistently active on Medium, you will eventually connect with other professional writers. They might offer advice through private notes, and comments. Private notes, especially when you are writing for their Medium publications.
When you get some great help and advice, it works for you. Then do a post for instance about what you have learned. Then include the authors by typing their names and adding a hyperlink. Or you can use the (at) sign to mention them. That is only available in Medium stories, not notes and comments.

As illustrated above, you can see one of my posts where I share 2 authors that had helped me a lot. I got some excellent advice from them. And seeing that it was Medium publication related, I did a post on Medium publications and mentioned them.
In all likelihood, these authors will respond with comments, and perhaps private notes. But they might also mention you in their upcoming posts. Which they did for me. Forming part of the larger picture when it comes to building recognition.
That way, they kind of like introduce you to their readers too. And being already recognized, it can be a rather comfortable “boost” for you. Getting mentioned by professional writers on Medium is an excellent way to build trust too.
Because when Mr., Miss, or Ms. professional writer mentions you, then obviously their readers might be curious and take a look. That way getting more people to not only your Medium stories but also your Medium profile.
Then we have the Medium lists. Now I am going to leave it up to you to do the research and create reading lists. By default, you should already have a reading list, titled, “Reading List”. But you should create other reading lists too, relevant to the subjects and topics your Medium story covers.

As seen above, that little “ribbon” icon will display all your reading lists in a drop-down menu when clicked. From there you can choose which reading lists you would like to share the Medium story. In return, the authors of these stories may in turn add your Medium stories to their lists.
Bear in mind that most Medium professional writers have Medium lists with quite a lot of followers. Yes, readers can follow reading lists too. Another “easy” way to get more exposure to your Medium stories.
But you must do the profile research for the authors you wish to connect with this way. We will get to the interest, topics, and GEO location targeting and the importance thereof in a bit. Under the last subheading of this article, “Build Medium stories drafts for GEO location.”.
Audience GEO location is important for two reasons. Establishing your affiliate product affordability, and timing. GEO location is how you calculate the best times to post for the best results and active engagement.
Writing for top Medium publications
This I have mentioned a few times, and I will say it again. One of the best ways to get a lot of exposure to your Medium stories is through Medium publications. But there are rules that I have already mentioned in several Medium stories. Just check my Medium Profile and read the stories on writing for Medium publications.
Currently, I have been approved and am writing for 12 well-known Medium publications. And I have seen a tremendous increase in views, reads, fans, and responses. It is worth it to do the research and get approved as a writer for large well-known Medium publications.
Some of these top Medium publications have followers in their hundreds of thousands, with millions of views and readers per month. But getting approved as a writer will depend on the quality of your content and your knowledge about professional writing.
Headers, sub-headers, image captions, provenance, and copyright with certain disclosures. Dep[ending on your content, where affiliate offers are shared, for instance, an affiliate disclosure will be required. But some publications require you also add the text in brackets (affiliate link) next to the hyperlink.
Titles and Medium profiles affect interests
Shorter titles attract more attention, or so I was told by one of the professional writers on Medium. After following the advice, I found that to be 100% effective. Not only with Medium but also with search engine meta display. Works like a charm to get your entire message out.
But with shorter titles, when you have more keywords and search phrases to target. They just include the primary ones in the title. Remember that your Medium story title becomes a slug to the primary Medium domain.
Choosing the right short title makes it easier understandable and indexable. Easier and more understandable to both your readers and search engines, contributing to the “first impression” strategy I have also covered a few times already.
Spicing up your Medium profile is basically about uploading a profile image as a GIF image file, and not the normal PNG file. But for this, you have to create a GIF file first. This can easily be done with Canva. By creating a GIF “logo” template size image and overlapping it with a video clip.
Now move the video clip backwards or forwards depending on how many elements your design has until you are happy with the effect. As illustrated below, an example of my personal Medium profile image, recently edited. I added a bit of lightning with a video clip.

But your GIG file cannot exceed the maximum upload file size of 25 Meg on Medium. Try keeping the GIF file as small as possible for faster load time when your Medium story gets read.
With your shorter titles, you might want to focus on “how to” guides, and “step-by-step” tutorials. People are mostly looking for solutions, answers, guides, and free stuff on the internet. Focus on those to grow a little faster. Get recognized for your ability to solve problems and also build trust.
Then include all those extra keywords and search phrases you didn’t include in your shorter title, in your subtitles. And populate your Medium story content with them too, along with the ones in your title.
Commenting and responding to stories
Bringing us back to your Medium lists. When you search through stories to comment on, add them to a list so that can become part of your planning. This is a consistency strategy I use with Medium writing, and building recognition and trust.
Search the Medium home page feed, for medium stories most relevant to your knowledge so you can add value to the topic and discussions. Check when the last comments were made, and focus on more recent comments, but do not neglect the 2 or 3-year-old comments. I actually even had responses on a few of those.
Other writers thanked me for reminding them of their old posts.
But the more recent comments do get the most response back. Then you add these Medium stories to your lists for later, I will tell you why in a bit when we get to the GEO location and timing under the last subheading of this article, “Build Medium stories drafts for GEO location.”.
But most of my commenting and response strategies are covered in another Medium story. You might want to check out the Medium story below. Because commenting and responses are just as paramount as writing stories and the quality of your content to get recognized.
Build Medium stories drafts for the GEO location
Don’t just publish your Medium stories randomly, I know I am also guilty sometimes when excitement takes over. Especially when you have made a new discovery, with a new idea for top-quality content. I know I can sometimes hardly contain myself.
But that was before I started experimenting with a GEO location and timing strategy with Medium stories and writing. I write all my stories on a Word document, including the pictures I use, etc. Because I am also building up a collection of my own content and designs.

I then save the pictures to my PC so I can upload them to Medium, like with writing any story on Medium. After finishing the writing of a new Medium story, I then load it into the Medium stories section as a draft. Don’t publish it just yet.
This by the way is also required for some Medium publications that only accept posts in draft format. But that is not the topic right now, GEO location and timing are. For the purpose of this demonstration, I will use my own target audience. I target a majority USA audience.
Why? Because I also focus on high-ticket affiliate marketing. Therefore my target audiences are a majority of all the top-tier countries. But let’s just work with USA visitors for now. Therefore I need to target Pacific Standard Time. This is the standard time zone for North America.
That is a time difference of +10 hours. When it is 6 AM in the morning pacific standard time, then it is 4 PM on my side in South Africa. So I save all the draft posts I have been working on the whole day, so I can post them at the best times.
This often means I have to stay up to post at around 1 to 2 AM in the morning on my side when it is around 4 PM when my target audience is, North America. These times may vary, but it is just for explanatory purposes.
Therefore my best posting, commenting, and engagement time will be from 6 PM to 9 AM on my side. When it is between 8 AM and 11 PM where my target audience is at. Then you just have to work out the best times from there.
Does your audience respond better in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings (on their side)? That way you can narrow down your best posting times and engagement times from where you are GEO located.
If you are not getting many responses, you might as well be posting at the wrong time. That is a mistake many of us make. I know I have for quite some time. But constant research always teaches us new things, ideas and strategies to try, right?
Write your Medium stories and keep the drafts after you have figured out the best times. Then just publish those drafts when the time is ready. Give it a few days and see where your stats are going. This works for me, and trust me when I say, timing is very important.
